Photo printing

OpenSUSE 11.2, 64bit, Gnome.

Every application I have tried to print photos in doesn’t work very well.

  • Print Assistant plugin (available in Gwenview) is missing passport photo size. Can’t figure out how to update it with a new template.

  • The “Print Image” dialog in several applications not only over-rides the driver, it over-rides the resolution and dimensions of the photo itself. You have to tell it to “resize” a 2"x2" image to 2"x2", otherwise it’s the wrong size, but then it mysteriously prints the wrong resolution!!!

As a stop-gap measure, I am using OpenOffice Writer, which is a surprisingly good layout program. Unfortunately no snapping to a grid to make sure they are all properly aligned, and no crop marks. Kinda hard to resize precisely as well.

I opened Software Manager to see if I could find anything else, but not much matched “photo”. I tried a few other packages recommended on the Internet, and all of them failed to install, with cryptic error messages.

Much obliged for insights and advice.

Am I overlooking something?

Can’t help you with your base problem. But in Writer, you might wanna set up
a table with fixed width and hight cells. Maybe play with the borders?
Could help a bit…

Any time things appear to be going better, you have overlooked
something.

One option may be to use ImageMagick; as long as you know the precise dimensions of the original, you can resize using ImageMagick units pretty accurately.

Then import the result into OO; as far as I can see, the problem with Gwenview is that the Custom page size option is incomplete.

Try inkscape, it has a lot of options that you can use.
