rotfl!rotfl! A lot to say about this, but I allways enjoy such sorts of conversation. Try to lure them into a longer discussion, wasting their time. Then get them angry in telling that you do not even have any anti virus package installed and that you have no virus at all. They won’t believe you like every human being that is confrontated with a truth that does not fit in his/her mind.
A very interesting conversation. These conversations I have with many people and professors in my University. But many of them believe that linux has not many programmes. Anyway they will see that they are wrong. My secret gun is safety and stability.;)
Yes, there really are scammers out there who try this sort of thing, looking for a gullible victim.
If you ever receive that kind of call, hangup unless it claims to be from your ISP. And if it claims to be from your ISP, be very skeptical as to whether it is true. Maybe ask for a confirming email message, and DO NOT give the caller your email address (your ISP should already have that).
I had a skype message about me having a Windows Virus and I need to download the program, funny I was running Linux, I have Time Warner Cable and they are always trying to give me that SA Internet Security, on one call I had a tech ask me if I had Antivirus, I said no and then he goes on a rant that has to be my problem, until I said I run Linux , oh he said your one of those people. The Modem was bad.
He just had another phone call, the same as in my OP
Funny I guess, but there is a serious side to this, because they are preying on the inexperienced. And we all know how many of those there are out there.
there is also this funny commercial in TV: my cleanpc.com or so. Its really funny. When you go on their website they want you to download a program which then should scan your computer. Maybe then the scam starts: telling the user horrific storys and that he needs to buy software for that.
My sister had that phone call two days ago. She is not a computer person and said she would get her husband to call the guy back. Needless to say, he wouldn’t give her his phone number.
Nice one. Fortunately I don’t have to do this sort of thing since I gave up my landline years ago. I occasionally get one or two on my mobile, but it please me to know that they are paying much more and by time than on the landline.

Yep, we do - and it’s a shame that people take advantage of those who
don’t know better.
Same type of scammers are ringing around in Ireland as well. Microsoft Ireland released a customer warning about it late last year. Read a bit about it here.
My neighbour got a call but was wise enough to say her neighbour would fix whatever was wrong with her pc… I am personally looking forward to a call but since I’m ex-directory I am unlikely to get one!
Plenty of people have fallen for it. If they didn’t they would stop looking. I deal with a lot of scare-ware Windows malware as well. Some people fall for that as well.
A page opened in my browser saying it was scanning for viruses.
It had an animation of a scanner running and showed a Mydocuments folder and system 32 folder counting up the viruses.
Then it said I had 9 viruses, 3 in My Documents and 6 in system 32.
Running Linux I don’t even have these folders.
The report had an ok button.
I clicked it and it tried to get me to accept a download of a windows executable.
I refused.
It then sent a dialog box stating that my computer was running slow and needed to be fixed with an ok button.
I clicked ok and it tried to upload the executable again.
I got board so I closed the page and it gave me another dialog.
Are you sure you want to leave this page, you have a virus.
I clicked ok and it tried to upload the executable again.
So I killed the tab, thinking, how many poor windows suckers clicked ok and ended up actually virusing their otherwise clean computer.
