Very weird bug I found. Initially i was on kubuntu 10.10 with kde 4.5.x and i realized that animations throughout kde stunk. For example, the kickoff menu would raise and lower very jerky. So thinking this was a kubuntu or even a kde 4.5.x problem, I made a switch to opensuse 11.3 and kde 4.4.x. After install i noticed that all animations, including the menu raising and lowering, where very smooth and crisp (like they should be). I later realized I wasn’t even using all my hardware’s power so I put my two gtx 460s in SLI=auto. After a reboot I realized that once again all animations got jerky again >:( . This leads me to believe,and for good reason, that kde’s visual performance is degraded with SLI enabled. Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, or similar observations???
wow quick reply, thanks for that. Yea I already installed the Nvidia drivers by using the OpenSuse 1-click install on the OpenSuse website (incredibly easy btw). Then i ran nvidia-xconfig --sli=auto to enable it. Double checked it was working by going into nvidia settings, and at that point i realized the menu choppyness.
So what were you expecting to use SLI with? Are you dual booting your PC with Windows? Did you try turning SLI off to see if that is the problem when two cards are installed?
So I use only nVidia cards in desktops, but I have never setup a SLI rig before. Normally, SLI is not going to help a normal desktop setup and further, I would wonder what Linux application is going to use it. If I was dual booting in order to use SLI with Windows games, I might try turning off SLI when running Linux, to see if the choppy operation goes away.
If you were running only Linux applications with no specific application in mind for SLI I might make it simple on myself and take one of the cards out. I might also search the nVidia forums for SLI issues when running Linux. Finally, I can help you with a kernel update to version 2.6.35 if there was any reason to suspect it might be related to the kernel version you are using. However, I have not heard of SLI problems related to the kernel version you are using in the openSUSE forums.
Good point, I never really thought about it like that. I disabled sli and the choppyness is gone. Im only on the desktop, I switch to windows for gaming. Thanks for the insight. Weird bug though.

You are very welcome Dans564. I read a lot of message here each day and not anywhere near all of them. Still I can guaranty that 99.99 % of everything you read is real attempts to be helpful and actually provide information that helps. People are people and some get grumpy and others are sick and we all can get our feelings hurt. None the less, anyone on the ubuntu forum that say this are wrong.
I will try to do the best I can to show that openSUSE is the best. I can and will not say anything bad about a fellow Linux Distro of obvious quality as ubuntu. I will stack up our support quality against the best of them however and know that we will come out on top.
All ill say is, i have always been an Ubuntu Gnome kinda guy for a couple of years. It was time for a switch and so far my OpenSuse KDE experience has been awesome to say the least.
You can find some posts here saying it’s the other way 'round. Neither is true. Everywhere around the world people in linux communities are trying to make good forums, wiki etc. Pseudo-religious warfare between the distros brings nothing but harm to the open source world in general.
