Sometimes my pc is slow : this can happen in firefox for example : i click on a thumbnail it comes with the mouse like if i was draging it but i’m not, i 'm only left clicking ; also clicking on other applications is sometimes slow : thunderbird, or even clicking on other applications like dolphin.
The pc is a core 2 duo with 4 gb of ram and nvidia geforce 7900 gs with nouveau driver , with tumbleweed and kde 4.6.
What are the possibilities that can slow down the machine ? (who said java ? )
Any tips or tracks to follow are welcome
openSUSE Tumbleweed , KDE 4.6 (upgrading when possible)
Does the last part refer to KDE? If so, does KDE come from a separate repo? Just wondering, since KDE is included in the Tumbleweed repo (and having issues atm).
Run “top” in a terminal window and check if you see any programs using lots of CPU or RAM.
A tip: install the NVIDIA driver “the hard way” and see of the problem persists.
in fact i only have oss, non oss , update , tumbleweed and packman for tumbleweed repos, i’m leaving tumbleweed my kde for the sake of stability

this is hard to trace for this is a short phenomenon even though repeated often ; in firefox it opens a new window which forces to surf in different windows or to drag back the thumbnail …
but i doubt this is long enough to top trace it (?)
also installing nvidia driver is not very comfy with tumbleweed for this version changes the kernel quite often
So what speed CPU or Governor are you using manchette_fr, do you know? I have a bash script that uses cpufrequtils to find out and set you can get here:
Both of these can effect the speed of your computer. While you have not said, how old is the computer and how often have you cleaned it? When CPU speed is dynamic, high temps caused by dust build up can slow you down. A good cleaning including blowing out the dust from your heat sinks can reduce heat and allow your speed to run faster.
How is your disk space doing? Have your cleaned out your temp folders in a while? A mass of temporary files and or low disk space can affect your PC performance.
hi :=)
about heat and dust : i’m often cleaning the pc, and just did,
i fear the driver is the cause but i’m tired of installing it “the hard way” and was expecting nouveau to be fine,
about tmp files : i forgot to set it (cleaning at boot up with yast) this time, just did.
your script : i need to take some time to look at it.
No offense meant here, but you may not want to be using Tumbleweed or any bleeding edge type update repositories if you can’t understand the output of top.
That machine is going to be buggy. You also have installed proprietary drivers with Tumbleweed repos, which means you have to recompile modules every single kernel update, right?
If you’re going to install the nvidia drivers, you may not want to update your kernel as often as you might like. You’ll have to recompile every time.
If you install the nVIDIA driver the hard way, you must reinstall the driver if you upgrade your kernel. If you use the nVIDIA repository method, you do not need to reinstall the video driver as it will be done automatically for you on a kernel update. This does not include if you should compile your own kernel however as you should just always reinstall the video driver the hard way in such a case.
This thread is in the wrong location. I am going to move this thread to the Tumbleweed area of our forum in about 30 minutes. I ask that all WEB based and NNTP user do not reply to this thread until after it has been moved to Tumbleweed. Note this post takes time to make it out through the NNTP gateway, which is why I ask for the wait.
I will post/advise after it has been moved to the Tumbleweed forum so that NNTP users have a ‘hook’ to which to reply and so that all users will then know it is safe to reply.
Thankyou for your patience during this upcoming thread move.
This thread was originally inappropriately posted in the ‘hardware’ area of our forum and has now been moved to Tumbleweed. NNTP users who want to read the old posts can either go here: Pc is slow sometimes or they can look at the old ‘hardware’ area. But I ask that NNTP users only reply on this new Tumbleweed area where the thread has now been moved.
This thread in Tumbleweed area is now open for all users to post wrt assisting user manchette_fr with his noted problem. Thank you for your patience during the move.
Reinstalling video driver after every kernel update isn’t neccessary, at least on ATI cards. Or my machine is unique
I’m using fglrx, and sometimes (quite often) after Tumbleweed kernel update, video driver still works ok (ati overdrive, opengl, video acceleration, everything, ).
The only thing I have to reinstall every single time is Virtualbox.
Of course this is not always the case, and sometimes fglrx kernel module has to be recompiled. Maybe it depends on what has been changed in kernel.
These are very good questions. Rather than complicating the situation by trying lots of things, this really sounds like a software issue aka bug. I would not mess about with CPU tuning etc, I detune for power saving with 4GB & a 4 yr old AMD X2 5600+ and I do not see such slowdowns as you describe, I benefit from a quieter cooler running system. In past I have seen a bug with dynamic governer where it’s sampling was over too long a period, so I think I’m likely to notice such a problem in Tumblweed. However most of the time since 3.0-rc4 I’ve been running with 3.0 kernels.
If rpm -qa |grep 4.6.95 shows lots of packages, then if it’s practical zypper dup-ing back to 11.4, testing & then re-upgrading to Tumbleweed sounds like good plan. If you only have a few wrongly upgraded packages, spot downgrades make sense with Software Manager. Should it be a Nouveau/Kwin issue, then simply booting with “nomodeset” trying FF with unacellarated “nv” driver might well suffice to localise the problem.
If you have found a bug, then reporting it with a good bugzilla entry, will help prioritise an update to Tumbleweed from upstream when fixes become available.
To get the likely security update I therefore did a spot upgrade :
