pavucontrol will not open and pulseaudio daemon errors

I tried to start pavucontrol yesterday and it spit out a lengthy warning about problems with pulseaudio, namely it was not running.

I check in yast services manager and indeed it is disabled, so I start it and it has errors.

Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait

Trying to solve this problem myself yesterday I installed “Consolekit” on advice in another thread, was this a good idea?

Anyone else having problems with pavucontrol or pulseaudio?

You should not enable the pulseaudio.service.
pulseaudio is started per user at login.

If you want to run it as global system service you would have to change some other configuration as well.

No. ConsoleKit is deprecated for some time already.
Systemd has taken over its funtionality.

Are you running a 32bit system?
There was an update to pulseaudio recently to fix pavucontrol, but that caused massive other problems, so got revoked again.

Downgrade your pulseaudio packages to the versions from the standard oss repo in that case.
