passwordless communication with ssh

Hi All,
I’ve installed suse 10.1 on two PCs. I linked both via a hub and the two PCs can talk to each other. I’m setting this up for running a code in parallel. I’ve also set up NFS server and shared /home folder with the second computer. Next step is to set up passwordless communication, here i have got a problem. I ran ssh-keygen -t rsa on PC A and copied id_rsa.pub to /home/usr/.ssh/authorzed_keys on the PC B and able to connect to PC B with out password. But, I can’t do the reverse i.e ssh from B to A is not possible even after copying the id_rsa.pub keys from B to A. ssh to A continues to ask for password and I am not sure what went wrong. The next step for me is to set up open PBS but I am stuck with ssh. Any suggestions?

Most likely the .ssh or the authorized keys files have wrong permissions, it should be logged in /var/log/messages upon login (depending a bit on the logging level).

If you’re unsure what the permissions should be, take a look here; http://www.unixpeople.com/HOWTO/configuring.ssh.html

Bad idea:

SUSE Linux Lifetime - openSUSE

Hi,
I’m new ti Linux, could you shed more light on /var/log/messages and what to look for. If I remember correct, permissions on both Pcs are the same. I’ll check that later. thanks

First of all, since you are using Version 2 ssh protocol, use authorized_keys2 as the file name.
Post the following (for both machines):

ls -l ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Use ssh-copy-id to copy keys to remote machines so you keep from messing
up permissions and files. It is a great script that should be there
automatically.

Good luck.

Otherwise try to add ‘-v’ to your SSH connection to get some verbosity in
your output.

Good luck.
