Password to logout?

Several months ago, my Suse 10.3 started to ask me for my root password when I ask it to shut down my system. It’s the very last thing, before it shuts off the PC. Sometimes I don’t stick around and the PC stays on all night waiting for the pw. Maybe it was something I did. I’d like to have it stop asking me that. Can anyone help me with this please?

Have a look in Yast>security and Users, somewhere IIRC there should be a setting for who is allowed to shutdown maybe it has been changed to root only which will require the root pass ( long time since I used 10.3 so cannot remember exactly where the settings are )

You should be able to set this to allow all to shutdown.

Thank you! In YaST>Security and Users>Local Security I found that my security was set to “Custom”. I changed it to “Home Workstation” and tried a couple shut downs and now the password is not asked for, it just shuts down.

Curiously, every time I look at Local Security since it always shows as being Custom, even though last time I selected Home and proceeded with that setting. Also, it is curious that there is no hint that a password will be required for shutdown in Custom. Go figure.

I tried using 11.0 when it first came out and had trouble so stayed with 10.3. I’ll do some reading here to see how you all are doing with 11.1 and maybe try again. 10.3 is working very well for me, but I am a novice.

Thanks for your help. It’s good to know you are here.

Forgot to add that in the Control Centre there should be a section for login/out here you can change who is allowed to shutdown the machine.

11.1 is not bad ( it does have a few gotha`s ) kde4 is OK but still not quite there yet I might get time someday to try the 4.2 as a lot of peeps are saying it is better than 4.1.3, Ok if you are not using the machine for production

Hi George, the same thing happened to me with Suse 10.0. I just found the Security settings mentioned in other replies this evening. I set the permission to users and although shutdown no longer requires the root password I do get a confirmation request half way through shutdown. Very annoying as it used to work fine and I hate waiting for the confirmation.
I shall try other permission settings to see if they get me back to preferred shutdown routine.

Meanwhile I have another problem on a different machine running 11.0. If I ask for a restart all goes well but if I ask for a shutdown the system stops but does not power off. I hope somebody reading this can advise how to get the power off to work after system has shut down.
