What is the best way to password protect an external drive? After searching I found a few programs which seem to perform what I want to do. However, I was hoping to get some feedback from those who are familiar with what I’m trying to do. Thanks
If you are only going to use the external device on Linux systems, use YaST to create an encrypted partition.
Therefore when you plug in the drive, openSUSE / other distros will ask you to enter the passphrase to mount the device.
Please expand a little bit more on what you wish to do.

All of mine are encrypted using the Encrypt options available from within
Partitioner (within Yast). I do not set them to auto-mount on bootup
since it prompts for a passphrase and I need to be able to reboot the
system remotely when I do not have an opportunity to enter that in, but so
far this is working well for me. This is all part of OpenSUSE out of the box.

Yah I forgot to mention I will be using it on non-Lniux windows systems as well. I just dont want anyone to be able to hook up my external drive to their pc and then start fooling with my data or whatever.
I myself have not created a password protected storage device compatible with Windows and Linux, a quick google has revealed FreeOTFE and TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux

There is encryption, but the native method is not multiplatform, AFAIK.
It might also be possible to use the ATA hardware password, but I have
never known of anybody using it in Linux. Also, the chipset of the external
box might not support it.
