Hi everyone, have problem with openSUSE 11 64 bit. had few installation problems
but then fine only problem is it will not boot into root, the login is accepted but the password is not. tried to log in as root and look for shadow file but same result, password not accepted and no shadow file exists. cursor does not accepting any letters. failsafe works. looks as if there is no file which stores password. any one any advise on how to configure password file or any advise.
Do you mean there is no /etc/passwd and no /etc/shadow? How do you log-in then at all?
BTW when you use all the deafults when the install askes you to enter a user, your root passwd is the same as the passwd of that user (silly, but true).
Hi Henk, the failsafe is able but no password allows me to log in as root, at the password prompt the cursor blinks but remains stopped and when trying to use root in failsafe the dialogue box disappears.
I am still trying to see before my eyes what you are doing. What do you mean by ‘boot as root’ (in your first post)? The system does not boot as root, it boots**.** It then attains a run level (5 when you use a GUI and 3 when you want text mode only). It then presents you with a login possibility (kdm/gdm when in runlevel 5, just a login: prompt when in 3).
When in runlevel 5 (the green login screen) you should not (and can not) login as root. Is this your problem?
