Partitioning Issue

Hi I’m completely new to the SUSE scene (so new I haven’t even installed yet), anyways my friend told me about openSUSE so I thought I’d try it. I just got rid of my ubuntu partition and digged into the live CD pile that I have, namely openSUSE Gnome.
Ok so I get to the partitioning stage of YAST, and it says “resize impossible due to inconsistent fs. Try checking fs under Windows.” Any solutions? and considering I need my windows partition I don’t want any comments like “F@%K windows get rid of it” so urm any solutions?

If you boot the live cd you have of suse, open a terminal and go su and do:

fdisk -l

post the result here:

You need to go back to windows, let it check the partition, preferably defragment after that IF you want to use the “easy” way. Otherwise you could dive in and try the custom partitioning

I was wondering if maybe I should make a partition on my windows boot, and then install on that?

Post the fdisk -l we asked for. And some of us may be able to help!

bash: fdisk: command not found
:\

su terminal !!

Amiright in thinking that su is a user changeing command? baring in mind that I am new to SUSE, am I missing something

Yes, but in the live cd, just type su and hit enter a couple of times, then do the fdisk -l

Ok thank you, I am obviously not the most advanced user but I know a bit, so here goes anyway.

"Disk /dev/sda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x78cbe1e9

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1314 10553344 27 Unknown
/dev/sda2 * 1314 24322 184805592 7 HPFS/NTFS"

If you have any help I will be truly grateful.

Been told that it might be due to being NTFS formatted and that a regular partition could be set up with the disk management for windows or a g parted live CD

How much free space do you have in windows. If plenty. You should defrag first.
Then use something like Parted Magic to shrink Vista and free some space. Be careful to leave enough space on Vista.

Let’s say you have 100GB free in Vista. To take 60GB away should be fine.

Then create an extended partition of all the space you free up. In our example 60GB.

Now boot the suse disk again and use custom partitioning and Then within the extended partition you create 3 logical partitions:
/ (15GB)
swap (2GB)
/home (All the rest)

Hi caf, thanks for all the help and support that you have offered, I used the windows partitioning app after a defrag with SmartDefrag (higly recommended for any windows user) when I went into YaST it automatically did all that you suggested and in a suitable ratio (gave SUSE 40gb) thanks alot, hope to see you around the forums again.

You are welcome. Enjoy!
