Partition for Dual Boot

Hi there!

Im new to linux and i want to try a dual boot system with WinXP and Suse 11, but im kinda lost on how to create the partition for the linux install, since i only have one HD.

Ive already installed WinXP so should i create a 20GB partion for Suse, using Partition Magic and leave the rest 55GB for WinXP and only then install suse or should i only create the partion when installing Suse?

System Specs

System: WinxXP
Gaphic Card: NVIDIA Quadro FX Go 1400
Screen Res: 1680x1050
HD: 75GB

Thanks in advanced

Don’t worry, openSUSE will guide you through the whole process as you install.

Defragment the drive in windows before you start.
Also after you finish installing, start windows a couple of times as it’ll wanna check the disk because you partitioned it.

IMHO your suggestion to prepare will give you more control:
You’ll get the 20Gb free without having to adjust things while inside the openSUSE installer.
You can get windows used to the shrunk partition before the install of openSUSE.
I’d use Partition Magic to shrink the windows partition and leave nothing but 20Gb of empty space at the end. The openSUSE installer will pick that up and run with it.
Just check before you click to accept the suggestions of the openSUSE installer – check that it’s not going to interfere with the windows partition, (apart from mounting it in openSUSE for you to access the files from inside openSUSE is OK).

Thanks guys!

Everything went fine… well until i went for dinner. After some reboots the system just doesnt start. I dont see the Loader screen anynore only a black screen.

Im not sure what went wrong, now i only get a black screen on the start up of my laptop. :’(

Any sugestion? :stuck_out_tongue:

Try repairing the openSUSE bootloader. Steps 1 and 2 of the linked tutorial:
GRUB Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista) using the Grub bootloader.
