Partition encryption on OpenSUSE 11

Hi,

Really liking OpenSUSE 11 and am considering encrypting my home partition.

Got some q’s tho please

  1. To encrypt my current /home would i have to recreate the partition as an encrypted partition and then copy my data onto it? Or can i encrypt whilst its in situ?

  2. How would the encryption work? Would i be able to change the password to my account and still have access to /home

  3. Is it supported for future updates? or would it be a case of backing up data, wiping and starting again with an encrypted partition?

Thank you

You have to copy it. If you don’t want to make a new partition you can
also use a file which is mounted to /home.

account pw and crypto pw are 2 different things. Note:you can’t change
the crypto pw (afaik).

Update usually works. During the installation you have to set it up in
the partitioner.

here is a how to

Encrypted Root File System - openSUSE

hope this helps and answers some of your questions.

THanks for that!
