Paravirtualization question

Exactly which packages do I need to install on a opensuse 11.1 guest to get the guest running in paravirtualized mode? Would of course be running on a Xen Host.

any special configs?

bump…nothing? ;-(

It’s only been twelve hours. Patience is a virtue.

I do not know much about this as I only ever do paravirt from the start
but I know you will at least need a new kernel and probably kernel
modules. With OpenSUSE it may just b e that much but again I’m unsure.
Every paravirt box I’ve setup has been done from scratch and has been
great (and full virt the same, though typically a little slower). What
are you starting with? For example you seem to imply you’re currently
doing full virtualization. If this is the case I believe you also must
change the configuration files on the host so it knows that the VM is now
paravirtualization. If you are, however, using another technology like
VirtualBox, KVM/Qemu, or vmware, you will need to do a bit more to convert
the guest over.

Good luck.

I guess I should be more specific. Currently I am doing full and not paravirtualization. I do not mind having to reinstall the guest OS to be para I rather start over and do it right. I guess what I am asking is what needs to be done to enable paravirtualization. What hypervisor are you using and what have you done to get the para-V running?

I-s there a Xen paravirtualization kernel available for opensuse 11.1? I see there are a bunch of vmware kernel modules in the virtualization repo, I do not think they provide paravirtualization, just the vmware tools.

Ah, I see. That helps me a bit. On my system I had SLES 10 SP2 until I
recently change them all (wiped/reinstalled) to SLES 11 (x86_64 in both
cases). To create a new Xen VM I use the ‘vm-install’ command which
prompts me about whether or not I want full virtualization or
paravirtualization. On my SLES 11 x86_64 box the last option (29) is for
an OpenSUSE 11 system which would probably work if I had an install source
of some kind. This is, as I mentioned, for an OpenSUSE guest on a SLES
host. I haven’t done anything OpenSUSE-ish with Xen on the host side for
a while so I can’t tell you how it will work there though I imagine this
should all be similar. As long as you are booted to the Xen kernel and
you have a processor/motherboard that will support the native support you
should be fine. I have the ‘V’ or ‘VT’ stuff required for this though I
had to (and you would definitely need to as it is never turned on by
default) enable this in my BIOS.

Good luck.

Install yast2-vm module and use it to configure the virtualization, wizards and all.

Isn’t that module for creating VMs?

I’m asking about getting the guest to work in Paravirtualization mode. Really I’m just experimenting here, I have never really used a guest in Paravirtualization mode before. I want to do some benchmarking to see if its worth the effort vs hardware virtualization.

Aah sorry, I had a sudden lapse in brain activity there and read your request wrong

 no worries! Happens to the best of us…
