panel section missing

I was trying to find where and how to configure the panel so that it’s
not that Windows-esque blue when everything else is some other color
scheme. When I closed what I thought was the configuration box (which
didn’t seem to have any options for configuring the panel), the section
of panel that has the icons for active windows disappeared. Now there is
a very, very wide clock and equally wide black window with the volume and
updater icon. I tried removing the .kde file from my home directory and
rebooting, but it didn’t work. Is there a way to get that center panel
back? Is there also a way to configure the color and transparency of the
panel? The KDE4.2 panel is pretty, but it seems incredibly limited
compared to the panel of KDE 3.5.

KDE 4.2
-Thanks!

In many ways it does seem KDE4 is not as customizable as KDE3.
Plasma is very new though so who knows what it will bring in the future,

I haven’t given up on it.
It is pretty, and there are a couple of things I do like. (split screen
in Dolphin and the sliding option for changing desktops is more
appealing to me than the cube/cylinder/sphere.)
For now, without the panel section that probably has a specific name,
I’m using alt-tab very frequently. My attempts at getting the center
panel back have resulted in more problems to fix, so I’ll be
patient…and open a bottle of mead.

Plasma is indeed very promising, its improved a lot since KDE 4.0.
But I am still not entirely sure I like it, Its just not as customizable yet
