Panel Bar Changes after reboot

I use the Air openSUSE theme for my panel bar, etc., yet, after rebooting (or starting up the computer after it has been shut down), the panel bar comes up as if it were configured with some kind of black theme, which I do not like - you can still see things like icons for windows, launcher, etc. except for the clock, since its font color is black.

How do I put a stop to this? I have tried everything I can think of, customized settings, different themes, and so on, yet I get the same results after booting into openSUSE.

I am using the openSUSE 11.2 KDE version.

Thanks,
Star_Gazer

Possibly you have the sessions setting in the Desktop Settings set to start a New session, rather than restore previous

No, it is set to restore previous session

Star_Gazer

How desperately do you need this fixing.

If you delete all these:

.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
.kde4/share/config/plasmarc

Logout immediately - then back in

You will need to do some resetting up.

If this doesn’t work, I have another card up my sleeve

Not much at all - it is a tiny annoyance.

If you delete all these:

.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
.kde4/share/config/plasmarc

Logout immediately - then back in

I did that and it did not stop the panel bar from coming up black, however, it did help with some other things which gave me better understanding of the desktop.

You will need to do some resetting up.

If this doesn’t work, I have another card up my sleeve

I notice if I do the Panel Settings, where that big bar comes up at them bottom of the screen (where you can add widgets, etc.), that if I click on the “height” button and move it, the panel bar will turn back chrome after moving it a little bit upwards - I played with it a little, and if the height is moved to a certain position, then it goes black. Fascinating.

Thanks,
Clifton

If you create a new user account, see if it happens there. I would be interested in knowing what happens.

Hello Star_Gazer,

I’m not encountering this.
But I found a thread in the Kubuntu forums about the same problem.

If you gently increase and decrease the panel height, you will notice a small “zone” where it turns black.
If you have the same can you tell me around which height this happens?

I would be interested in knowing what happens.
I’m also interested in this strange problem.

Good luck!

I did do a test user account, and the problem did not occur, so I guess it has something to do with my KDE 4.4.1 (release 227) settings.

do this

mv .kde4 .kde4-backup

now type:
startx

You can import application settings Eg; konversation
but I would just re-do all the rest. When happy make a backup and delete the old folder we just re-named .kde4-backup

I appreciate the link - I will look into it - it “appears” to be my KDE settings are out-of-whack.

If you have the same can you tell me around which height this happens?

I cannot give the exact height, but did find out this morning I can easily adjust the height of the panel bar to return it to the chrome color instead of black. Strange, that at a certain height, the panel bar goes black (it is still readable except the clock, which I can change the font color of - but I live my chrome :stuck_out_tongue: )

Here is the image:

I’m also interested in this strange problem.

It would be nice for all of us to know how the problems occurs, so people can see how to handle it, or fix it, indeed.

Good luck!

Thanks.

That is so cool. Probably a good idea for backing up certain directories too.

One of the glories of Internet Forums is when a person seeks help for something, they learn other things as well.

I’ll give it a shot - what concerns me “at this point in time” is knowing which files to keep safe and transfer back to .kde4 (e.g. krbookmarks.html, etc.), and I have yet to be affiliated with some of the user files in the .kde4 directories, since I am still in elementary school where linux and kde is concerned.

Thanks,
Star_Gazer

If and when I do this. I try and bring back as little as possible. I mentioned konversation because for me there is quite a bit of setting up in that. If you used kmail, you might want that. The less you bring back, the less likely you are to bring back the problem.

Hello!

I found a bug report about the same problem.
Comments #3, #5, #6, #7 and #10 say it happens when desktop effects are disabled.
So could you tell us if you have desktop effects disabled or not?
And which version of KDE you have?
Because some say it only happens in KDE 4.4.X.

I’ve got desktop effects enabled so I disabled it to see if I get the same problem.
I couldn’t recreate the problem, but I found another problem that could be related.
When I change the height of my panel the pattern sometimes disappears.

Thanks. I do have desktop effects disabled - I have tried it and experimented with it. I think I can recreate the problem even with desktop effects enabled.

Thanks. I’ll look into the bug report link you have graciously provided. Since I found out yesterday I can simply adjust the height to put the panel bar back to chrome from black, I feel somewhat better now.

Star_Gazer

A very special thanks to all of you for your help, education, etc. I did read the comments at the bugs.kde.org site as well.

I have tried the “Lock Widgets” selection for the panel bar, have logged out and back in, rebooted the computer, and the panel bar maintains its chrome (or grey) color and does not turn up with that black shade.

So if anyone else here encounters that problem, we can suggest the “lock widgets” feature, once the user desired height of the panel bar is reached. Eventually, I suspect the bug will be fixed.

Star_Gazer

This could also be related to the video card used. What do you have, did you install a driver?

How can I retrieve that information? I have a relatively new Motherboard/

did you install a driver?

I have not installed any particular drivers on my own - I had assumed that was installed when I installed from the Lived CD.

Star_Gazer

In a terminal

/sbin/lspci -nnk

will give us some idea

Thanks. I searched for the words “monitor” and “video” is the screen output and did Konsole did not find any, thus, I will present all of the output from /sbin/lspci -nnk:
