Panasonic 50" plasma + 1080p = blurry fonts...

Hi.

I tried to find a solution here and on nvidias forum but had no success.
My problem is that I can’t get my fonts looking crisp when I use HDMI, when I use vga cable I get nice fonts but then I’m stuck at 1366x768.

I tried different ways to force DPI (DisplaySize mostly) but no difference in quality only size…

Opensuse 11.3, KDE 4.4.4

GeForce GT 240

NVIDIA Driver Version: 260.19.04

btw. hello all, first post here

The nVidia 256.53 driver seems to be the most recent driver for 64 bit Linux. Is the 260.19.04 driver a beta driver for Linux by chance? Anyway, what is the actual native format for your TV? While any big TV these days claim to support 1080P, their native resolution may be lower and oddly, work better when in native mode when viewing Blu-Ray movies I have found (not under Linux though). Further, did you know you can borrow fonts from your Windows setup? For instance, I have had better luck with the Windows Vista Segoe UI font and using anti-aliasing and sub pixel rendering. Basically, I copied all of the fonts folder from Windows to a folder on openSUSE. I then used the Computer Administration / Font Installer to bring in System Wide fonts. Finally, I go into Look & Feel / Appearance and adjust the fonts I see as a user, this is in KDE. I must also add that I also have an nVidia 240 and was not impressed with this card. The 250 seems to have been a better choice in Linux for me as I have shelved my 240 for now. I had install problems with the 240 that required I dig up an old VGA monitor before I could complete the install. The nVidia driver did allow my LG 37" TV to work after all was done, but it was a real install nightmare. The nVidia 250 on the same TV had no such problem, very odd.

Thank You,

Yes the 260.19.04 is the latest beta.

I will try to copy some fonts from a windows install but I don’t think its a problem with the type of font used.
The native resolution when using vga is 1366x768 but when using hdmi cable its 1920x1080 and 1080p worked when I used XP and it works under Linux to, movies etc is all perfect, it’s just the fonts that is messed up.

Thanks, I just downloaded the latest beta driver, but I am not sure I will load it just yet. I do see where someone else put up a thread saying the new driver works with the most recent kernel 2.6.36 as the older nVidia driver did not work with it.

Thank You,
