hello, I recently installed 11.4, and now I notice that pan newsreader isn’t starting up. I also tried Grabit using wine, but same result. I there maybe a way I could get pan to work, or is there another NZB-grabber available that I can use in 11.4?

That sounds like a bug, you should report that back to the pan team.

Does the Pan team still exist? The latest version of Pan is 0.133, “House of
Butterflies”, and this is the one provided by openSUSE. This was released on
1st August 2008. According to their website, http://pan.rebelbase.com/, it
is a beta release. The latest stable release is 0.14.2, which was released
on August 31st 2003. Yes, 2003!
I also have the horrible impression that Knode is no longer actively
supported, judging by the lack of any response to bug reports in the past
year or so. I hope I’m mistaken

The guy who had done a lot of the work on pan (Charles) has headed off to
work on other projects for the most part, but there is another developer
who’s started to take over development by applying user-contributed
patches and building his own repository on github.
0.14.2 is a very old release indeed, pre-rewrite. The 0.13x releases
are described as “beta” but most of us who use it (or follow the pan
mailing lists) consider them to be stable, and the “beta” tag to be
similar to the beta tag that Google used on gmail forever.

That’s good news. I’ve been getting pessimistic about the future of
newsreaders. Too many people these days seem to have the odd idea that
forums are somehow superior and hence NNTP usage is falling.

Some might argue that gmail still deserves its beta label but I’d never
stoop so low.

Quite a number of us access these forums via nntp
In fact, I would not participate here if the nntp <-> forum gateway did not
exist.
But you are right, news related software is lagging behind. I use leafnode
to get a local copy and thunderbird, with local cache disabled - because
leafnode does a better job for that, going from one message to the next is
instantaneous. However, leafnode has some uncorrected bugs. Previously, I
tested a number of readers, and found lacks in all of them. I use
thunderbird because I can accept its set of problems better than the
others’ sets of problems

Not you, but the OP.
People using the forum do not usually see threads, the default is linear mode.

Thanks. Trying to make sense of what some of these forum posters are talking
about and to whom is a bit of a pain. Never mind, I guess it’s all part of
life’s rich pageant.
speaking of m4, if I install this will it eventually upgrade stable, or will a reinstall be required? thanks…(I want to use m4 simply because hibernation “works” unlike most other distros…thanks

As each Milestone is released, you will be able to do a “sudo zypper dup” to
upgrade. That will work all the way to the GM.
