All I do is connect my Palm to the usb port, and it starts a reset loop. It resets, gets booted, and crashes to reset again.
What’s up with this? BTW, this same palm worked with gnome pilot on Debian and Vector installs, and works currently with an XP install. But on my 11.2 suse, it goes crazy.
Ideas appreciated!
I found this: Usb hard drive won’t mount
It tells me about a couple of possible ways to help determine symptoms and causes.
Messages shows the looping crash behavior below. I don’t see anything in there that helps me - maybe somebody else does?? Plz? Messages contains many loops just like the second one below, I snipped.
I’m thinking there is a config file somewhere, and I need to add a parameter, but I haven’t the faintest idea where, or which file. Please advise.

Hi
My Palm TX has the same problem.http://forums.opensuse.org/images/smiliesnew/crying.png My dmesg looks identical.
The thing worked fine with 11.1 but now it resets continuously.Every help is appreciated very much because i need my Palm daily-
Thanks a lot
I never found the answer. I just used my windows machine, and I’m not currently using my Palm on a regular basis. Unfortunately, my last windows box is just about ready for final internment in that great graveyard in the sky - but like I mentioned, I’m not using the Palm currently - so - it is just sitting on my desk.

I have the same problem when connecting a PalmTX.
It seems that “modem-manager” is responsible for the reset. What I tried was:
- remove executable rights from /usr/sbin/modem-manager
- kill the running modem-manager process
After that the Palm could be connected without any problems (and synced via JPilot using “usb:”).
I have no idea what this “probing” of modem-manager does…but from my experience this event is what reboots/resets the connected Palm.
just my 0.02€
Hi
as far as i know modemmanager sends AT Commands in an attempt to dial into a telephone net. Unfortunately modemmanager is vital for users of UMTS Sticks etc.
I tried to take away the executable rights from modemmanager then at least my Palm didn’t reset all the time. The Pipes of K-Pilot were still broken.
Hopefully we will find a solution.http://forums.opensuse.org/images/smiliesnew/tongue.png
Well - I’ve been through a couple of firestorms, one tornado, and 25 hurricanes since I posted this - or at least I feel like it. Life has been that way lately.
I’ll have to make note of this answer - I can’t verify it now - I’m in the process of reinstalling suse 11.2 on that box. I will surely check out the whole Palm issue again, tho!
Many thanks.
Well - modem-manager is definitely involved. Gee, that seems so obvious, once I know that it is an executable, and re-read my own error messages. It wasn’t a running process - or maybe I forgot to check all processes and not just mine - but I didn’t see it.
So, I removed executable permissions from modem-manager. And the Palm still kept resetting. So I rebooted, and now it works. In retrospect, it is more likely that I forgot to check “All processes”, and that was why I didn’t see it, but I’d say we have a bug reportable thing going on here.
Now, how do I report a bug in modem-manager? To who?
I have filed bug reports with suse and with the modemmanager author’s website.
This may not be the whole of the problem, altho there was something strangely similar reported in another thread - where modemmanager was continually trying to start, and shouldn’t have been.
In my case, disabling modemmanager killed the constant reset cycle, but didn’t resolve the larger problem of getting gpilot to talk to the Palm. Updates to follow as available.
Update:
Disabling modemmanager fixed the constant reset, already said that. Don’t know what somebody would do if they NEEDED modemmanager.
To get the Palm operating (syncing thru gpilot), I went back to when I had a similar issue when using Vector Linux. The problem was how udev was creating the device nodes, and the permissions it gave to those nodes. This thread, on the Vector forum boards, describes the fix, and has some useful links to other helpful Palm sites.
Can’t get Palm to sync
Issue SOLVED.
