I had problems with hard disk failing and bad block informations in smartctl and palimpsest.
After several avaliations a concluded that apps don’t show smart informations if a hard disk partition is monted.
When i boot with livecd it shows a failure in the hard disk, but in monted system dont.
Is it not rather that it doesn’t check mounted partitions?
I already had palimpsest warnings from (Fedora) live CDs, I chose to ignore them … but ended up replacing the HDs within a few weeks, as they had indeed bad sectors.

SMART information is only shown if the daemon is properly configured and is
running.

How is your definition for “daemon properly configured” and “running”?
- If properly configured is the default configuration from a system instaled from the liveCD, than the answer is YES
- If running you refer to the service started, than the answer is YES
Aditionally, when i looked in GSmartControl the information about smart is showed, at the same time Palimpsest shows “not suported”.
When Palimpsest shows anything is only when the disk doesn´t have any partition mounted, if it´s monted, the smart information is “not suported”.

I can not be sure that the default configuration is correct. It probably
is, but I’m not sure.

I’m not familiar with palimpsest nor GSmartControl; the daemon logs the
information in the main logfile as defined by syslog. A problem should be
reported as “warning”. The mounted state of partitions is not relevant.
I’ve just started palimsest, interesting app. Although some info is
incorrect, it says my disks are pata when they are sata. I see the SMART
section, as “not supported”. It must be a mis-feature, or something else.

Carlos,
If you don’t know anything, don’t write something, it’s a better use of the time of both of us.

Then don’t ask in forums. That is how it is.
This is not a paid consultancy service; here everybody is free to talk,
even of the weather.

That’s an interesting piece of advice … but I see the problem differently: We’re not losing time ; time is losing us. And how would you know what prevents you from achieving knowledge if Carlos would stop writing? :\
I’m kind of kidding, but wrong suggestions or opinions can be as useful as right suggestions when you know how to use them. And can you imagine how the libraries would look like (and the world in general) if people would only write about what they know? lol!
If you want to talk about the weather, open a thread to this.
Here is not a paid consultancy service, yes, but is not a psychiatrist or psychologist to souve your necessity for attention too.
If you really want to talk about anything, open an account on msn, there is also free to write about anything and you will find people with free time to spend as you.
I have no interest in knowing what he knows or does not know, I encountered a problem, I questioned it and I believe that people who take the trouble to respond will at least think about the problem and suggest solutions or alternatives to solve the problem. And do not keep writing what is written in the manual or suggestions without any knowledge of the subject.
As I said to him, he can talk about whatever he wants with whoever he wants, the world is free (except in some countries) but if he wants to spend his spare time, I believe that the best place for him to do this is msn, or any other similar, there he can do that too and no one will say he does not have to write useful, this is a forum hoped talks on technical matters, among people who know linux, opensuse, open source programs etc… Or here is a forum to talk about religion, health, economy, politics, sports or other matters that are not related to opensuse? If this is the case, we will discuss the theory of creation of the universe, if God exists, faith, about which the best way to make coffee, what will be the next financial bubble?, Etc…

We do.
It is you who do not understand how forums work.
Now go away and learn yourself.

Telling people how to provide you help is most likely going to get you no
help at all.
Let’s get the thread back on topic and stop attacking each other over
what help was/wasn’t given.
Thanks

And attacking who with the best of intentions tried to help, misinterpreted
the question, and failed, is not going to attract many more people to
attempt it, IMHO.

Jim,
The problem is:
the palimpsest does not display information about the smart if the hd is mounted with partitions.
Other tools like GSmartControl display this information.
Have you seen any comments on anything that helped to solve this?
I have no intention of telling people how to help me, but I think the comments should be about solutions to the problem and not suggested to change the subject.
# rpm -qf /usr/bin/palimpsest

# uname -a

Checking for service smartd running
# smartd --version
smartd 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (SUSE RPM)
Here’s the info I get for an hd with mounted partitions:

In my many years of troubleshooting, I’ve learned that often a discussion
that appears unrelated can lead to a spark of insight that leads to a
solution. So while it may not be obvious how some of the discussion
helps, it often is the case that such discussion can be useful even if it
is only tangentially related to the problem.
My goal in posting my earlier reply is to stop people from attacking each
other and to get back to talking about the issue rather than about the
help (or perceived lack of help) received.
IOW, keep it friendly.
