The first time PackageKit Update Applet ran, it asked me for the root password. I accidentally pressed enter after making a typo, and ever since then Update Applet fails with the error:
Authorization failed
You have failed to provide correct authentication.
Please check any passwords or account settings.
Failed to obtain authentication.
It never lets me input a new password.
Two questions:
Am I doing something wrong, or is this actually a bug? The possibility has been mentioned in other posts on the topic.
Where does PackageKit store its files? I’ll either change the password myself or delete the file where it’s written, hopefully that will trigger PackageKit to ask again.
As most of us do not use PackageKit and advise others not to use it, I guess not much experience with it’s details is available here.
Thus, while you may wait a bit here to see if somebody has an explanation, you better use YaST and/or zypper for your sofware management.
(e.g. YaST > Software > Online update for the official openSUSE Security and Recommended patches in the Update repo).
Thanks, it looks like that’s what I’ll have to do. Is there a way to get YOU to run automatically, other than setting up a cron job? I tried following the instructions here here, but there was no box for “Automatic Online Update”.
Sorry, I didn’t say what I meant. I like that PackageKit notifies me when there are updates available. Can YOU be configured to do that? I’m terrible at remembering to check manually.
I guess it is a bug and PackageKit saved the wrong password for You somewhere (I’ve got no idea where). I think You could try to report a bug in the openSUSE bugzilla for this or look for the place where the password was stored
Maybe it’s somewhere in your home directory ? You can check this by creating a new user and see if You can enter the password for PackageKit as that new user.
