PackageKit alternative

OpenSuse 11.2 AMD64

My question - how can I use Zypper to do the job of PackageKit ? That is, install security and recommended updates. If possible, I would like to then remove PackageKit. Do you see any problems ?

Open a terminal and enter ‘zypper help up’ for info on update options for zypper. You can restrict it to requires, recommends, etc.

Had a look at your suggestion.
Still trying to work this out. What does PackageKit default to ? Where does it get its upgrade info from ?

The PackageKit applet lists needed patches by default. ‘zypper lp’ is the equivalent for this. To install patches, use

zypper up -t patches

To update by package, use

zypper up -t package <packagename>

Just leave packagekit alone, don’t use it for updates. It will run periodically and inform you that
there are needed updates, but that’s all, just ignore it. Then start up yast or zypper and install
whatever you want.
