P2Pool - Bitcoin

There is an application server that is called P2Pool that most people use Ubuntu to run it. I myself have a Xi3 Z3RO system that came with SuSE. The problem I am having is I am not sure how to convert some of the commands from Ubuntu to SuSE zypper and need some help. Also Ubuntu won’t install on the Z3RO for some reason.

The P2Pool application server is for people who want to setup their own bitcoin pool server.

The installation starts out with this:

sudo aptitude install python-software-properties
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bitcoind

The first command does run but it comes back saying it can’t find python-software-properties.

Then to install the packages for P2Pool this command needs to be run.

sudo aptitude install screen git python-rrdtool python-pygame python-scipy python-twisted python-twisted-web python-imaging

The reset of manual which I don’t really need to know as it talks about setting up the other crypto currencies can be found here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=62842.0

I would appreciate your help!
Thanks

Hi
So all you need is bitcoind, just install bitcoin from the network repo which contains bitcoind;
http://software.opensuse.org/package/bitcoin

BTW, these are the openSUSE forums (not SuSE) and we allways appreciate it when you tell us which version of openSUSE you use.

OpenSuSE 13.1

So Python is installed by default on OpenSuSE?

Hi
Yes, you don’t need that first python software app, that’s an Ubuntu
thing, you don’t need the ppa that’s an Ubuntu thin, you just need that
bitcoin daemon, the rest (in the second section) are available by
default in openSUSE.

So grab the bitcoin one and install via zypper in, then run;

zypper in screen git python-rrdtool python-pygame python-scipy python-twisted python-twisted-web python-imaging

I am having trouble with OpenSUSE 13.1 now. I tried to install the ATI Catalyst driver and I was prompted to install the repositories, the same thing happen when I wanted to read the readme file for Bitcoin-QT. In the installation process is there something else I need to check off so I am not going back and forth like this?

Thanks,

Hi
Just follow the how to, and substitute the apt-get install with zypper
in (I use less in a terminal for readme’s). Install bitcoin, edit the
config file etc as per the how to. Then install all the other apps
required and run the commands screen, git etc as indicated?

For your graphics card issues, start another thread on what you did,
the gpu hardware etc…

I downloaded the Bitcoin-QT for Linux, it has bitcoind (headless) and bitcoin-qt (GUI). Both are pre-complied and the GUI run, but do I need to put them somewhere (they both look like gear icons)?

Just downloading the blockinfo now.

Hi
So you installed the rpms for the network repository?

Hi
From this link;
http://software.opensuse.org/package/bitcoin
expand the openSUSE 13.1 section, see the network repository, click on
your arch 32 or 64 bit download the rpm. This package includes bitcoind
and bitcoin-qt.
The packager hasn’t run the macros to update the desktop entries, but
next time you login, the icons should appear.

I just clicked on the 1 Click Install and it installed the network repo but I don’t see anything for bitcoin-qt or bitcoind. (shrug)

I should mention I am using KDE not GNOME if that matters.

Thanks,

I went back and installed the 64bit rpm. It installed the latest bitcoin software, I restarted and no icons in KDE and I can’t find bitcoin-qt anywhere else other than were I stored it from my initial bitcoin-qt installation which is on my KDE folder (in a folder).

( https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/network/bitcoin/bitcoin.spec?expand=1
) they are in /usr/bin and called bitcoind and bitcoin-qt

Run;

which bitcoind
which bitcoin-qt

I did a search in KDE and it found bitcoin with an icon. But I am not sure which bitcoin it using, if it’s using the one I have in my desktop\bitcoin-qt…\bin\64\bitcoin-qt or if it’s using the one from usr/bin/ is there anyway to tell?

I tried right clicking and getting properties but it doesn’t show me the path or location. :frowning:

If I can get the usr/bin one to be the default I can trash the one I have in my desktop folder.

I am still waiting for the blockchain to download, I am down to 71 days, before I run the P2Pool install command.

Thanks for your help so far!

Hi
Running the which command will identify, but I am pretty sure it’s
running the one installed from the repo, since /usr/bin is in your
path. I would trash the one in the desktop directory.

Hi, okay so after the blockchain was done downloading and I ran the zypper command, it says to run P2pool I need to type the following:
screen -d -m -S btcp2pool ~/p2pool/run_p2pool.py --give-author 0 usuariox SupEr3421Senha_SECRETAandGRandE

I did this and got a prompt, no messages.

Then is says to view your P2pool type: screen -x btcp2pool
After I do this it says there is no screen to be attached matching btcp2pool, also when I hit the openSUSE machine on port 9332/graphs/ its unable to load the page which suggests its not running but I am seeing a lot LAN traffic on the openSUSE since I ran the running command. How do I tell if it’s running again?

Thanks!

That “SupEr3421Senha_SECRETAandGRandE” is a password.
Is that yours? >:-)

Actually it’s not, but it’s only the password the p2pool uses to talk to the bitcoin wallet on the server. But that’s been changed now.

I managed to figure out all the bugs, thanks for everyone’s help! :slight_smile:
