I have been using owncloud for several months:
been successful for replacing:
samba (webdavs in dolphin, esfile explorer for android)
dropbox replacement,
android devices: sync for calendar and contacts (calDAV, CardDAV)
now the last step is to create an email server…
On android I don’t care if it is a web app interface with owncloud, pop, or imap (could use k9)
The server would be on the same that is already running owncloud.
Keeping in mind that I have never done an email server, thus not well versed,
I am hoping that someone could provide some suggestions.
A few years ago I set up my own personal mailserver on openSUSE as a workaround for an issue that I’ve long since forgotten. The setup was esay, and it seemed to work flawlessly OTB, however it turned out to be a really bad idea. I began discovering that many folks never got my emails. It seems that many mailservers out there will reject email that did not originate from a “known” SMTP server. Further research seemed to indicate that the administrators of those servers subscribed to a variety of white lists and to black lists of known spammers etc. Since my server was not (a.) on those white lists and (b.) I have a Bahamian IP my mail was automatically rejected out of hand, and no error message was generated to alert me to the rejection.
After many weeks of frustration, including attempts to ID the many lists and get accepted by them, I gave up. I’ve filled out Gov’t security clearance applications that were a lot less invasive than some of theirs.
Now I’m back to using commercial mailservers hosted by a hosting service, and I will remain so.
