I was previously dual booting Xubuntu and Windows 8 using grub2. Each OS was installed on separate SSDs (windows on sdb and Xubuntu on sdc - I have an additional storage drive at sda). I replaced Xubuntu with Opensuse and now I don’t see my Windows 8 installation. I’m not sure if I’m using UEFI for booting or not. Is there a simple way to restore my Windows 8 boot to the grub2 menu? Does anyone know of a simple reference to help me figure this out?
If you installed in mixed mode ie one os in legacy the other in EFI then it will not work you can not chain OS’s that boot in different modes. I suggest you determine how each is installed.
You should be able to simply switch bootloader. Go to YaST bootloader and select GRUB2 (not GRUB2-EFI) as bootloader. Reboot and make sure to use legacy boot this time. Now run “update-bootloader --refresh” - it should add Windows to GRUB2 boot menu.
Thanks for the advice. Of course, I already reinstalled in legacy mode (at least I think I did). Now, my system boots straight into Windows. When I try to boot straight to the opensuse hard drive from the BIOS, it still boots me straight to windows. Any advice for this scenario?
Well, it could be that you think you have selected openSUSE drive, but your BIOS is always using the same drive order or that booting from openSUSE drive fails and BIOS proceeds with the next choice.
