I have not used OSX since 2011 (at that time I thought it was greatest thing) so I thought it was time to check in and see what was up. I threw together an imac from some spare parts around the house and installed my legit copy of snow leopard and then bought upgrade to Mountian Lion.
My conclusions after a couple days of use are that I have a better OS with openSUSE 13.1.
Installing apps outside of the app store requires no less than 6 mouse clicks and a password. I would rather do yast2 one-click method or regular repo install any day.
Applications are still way over priced, I mean really $35 for a launcher/clipboard thing. Compare this to the same android app that cost $2 and the developer still makes huge money because of large consumer base. I then think about the open source Linux community where I can get some of the same functionality for a donation I consider worthy (I like to donate to good developers).
Development seems stagnant even after all the years I have been away the same apps and developers have stayed the same and not really made any innovation. I wonder why? Is it the OSX app store or something else?
In the short time I have been looking around for mac software I have run into several rants from developers about the app store and its policies. It mostly boils down to Apples rejection of software updates that do not take advantage of the newest OSX technology, ie total rewrite of software per new osx release.
DigiKam blows away iphoto in almost every way possible, I never though I would find a better photo software when I was using osx.
iTunes can not play ogg or flac, what is up with that? On the other hand, it is more user friendly than Amorak.
Hardly any hardware actually works with OSX, I am talking about peripherals like mice, keyboard, speakers, etc… Of course if you actually have a macbook you really do not need this stuff so no big deal but if you are using imac then you have limited hardware.
Mono actually works better in Linux, I need this for keepass 2.x.
So in short, I am totally happy with my move to Linux and openSUSE and I can finally put my mac envy in the rear view mirror.
After checking out the other side again (closed source) I am sure that oss and open OS is going to provide the best most economical operating system.
And then you’ll have an additional repo, possible file conflicts, vendor change issues, the application needs to be compiled vs specific version of openSuSE and you’ll have tons of redundant files if you remove the application because it’s not self contained - most of the applications on App Store work on 10.6.8 -> 10.9.1 straight off the bat.
You can get pretty much all the same applications for OS X as you can for Linux, ever heard of Brew/MacPorts and so forth. There are literally thousands upon thousands of free and open source apps there.
I’m an avid Linux user myself too but to say that Linux desktop has gone anywhere in the last 5 years is… is a bit of a stretch. Drivers (especially graphics) are still horrible, audio system is downright broken, application installation across the platform is nigh impossible (each distribution practically blows things up, every version is guaranteed to break something, each application needs to be tested against a specific release of a specific distribution with specific updates) and configuration tools for the ‘average’ user in case of an emergency/repair are non-existent.
Amarok cannot play MP3 out of the box either, nor can it play AAC. What’s up with that?
Show me one keyboard or mouse that does not work with a Mac - or Linux for that matter. Speakers don’t work? Are you serious?
1Password is way better. Also Keepass doesn’t work properly on Chrome / Chromium on Linux.
With no disrespect intended, most of these issues aren’t issues but your personal feelings on the matter.
I was an early OS/X adopter, but gave it up around 2003 for Linux and Windows, and have not looked back. It’s true that Apple builds great laptops, but I prefer a Lenovo Thinkpad any day compared to an Apple, and Thinkpads work well with both Linux and Windows, plus support is excellent - I doubt it is as good with Apple.
The Intel/Mesa stack I use has improved steadily. For games on Steam I have a much better framerate than Windows on the same laptop, which honestly surprised me.

Mp3 should work with fluendo/gstreamer. Aac is a legal issue. I assume Apple owns rights to use aac. You pay this behind the scenes as part of the cost of OSX.
Meh openSUSE has gotten much better with this kind of stuff though, with this kind of asessment makes it look like the last version you used was 9.x or something, sure does it have one or two issues still yes but its not as crazy with that kind of stuff as it used to be.

All for the low low price of owning a computer that is twice as expensive as a normal PC wuith hardware with half the value!

I have used Linux for about the same time and I would argue otherwise.
In fact I would say driver support has improved, especially with opensource drivers as they handle things quite well these days.
Sure it needs more help, thankfully I think we will get it as AMD and nvidia have stepped up their game in linux support.
We just need better legacy support, and better co operation and i think we will get it.
As for audio?
Meh, I say Pulse audio is stabilizing and Alsa is getting better too.
The latest ALSA seems to be very good on my tests but YMMV as with anything.
As for that last one, yeah makes me think you are using an old linux here as i have had little issue installing apps across different distros.
The .rpm I use for chrome works here as it does in fedora same with debs between buntu and debian.
sure one or two have issues but most are from ubuntu .debs as ubuntu has strayed from debian quite a bit.

Actually amaok can play mp3 out of the box on some distros, just not on openSUSE due to legal reasons

Understood, Miuku - and your contributions here have been greatly
