OS12.2: flash uses 100% CPU with choppy playback

When I go to a website using flash video’s, my cpu usage goes to 100% and flash videos playback is choppy. My is powerfull enough, it’s just that flash does not seem to use the GPU, but the CPU to play video. What can be done about this. This problem is very annoying since the huge amount of websites that use flash.

Any update on this one? Chopy flash playback is very annoying because it impacts so many websites like imdb, youtube, etc.

am I the only one who has this issue? Or am I the only one who cares?

What sort of video card do you have? If Nvidia or ATI, do you use their
proprietary drivers? And if you do, do you have hardware vide enabled in
flash (which may be broken and produce wrong colors)?

I have an Nvidia card with proprietary drivers installed. KDE compositing, video playback, etc works great. Just flash is not. How exactly can I enable hardware video for flash. It seems disabled since it uses 100% CPU.

When I go to Kickoff → Adobe Flash Player. I don’t have an option to enable hardware acceleration… Back in Opensuse 11.4 I had no problem with flash using same hardware.

Right click into a flash video and choose the flash settings then you
can enable and disable hardware acceleration.

Ok found it, it seems that this option is not always shown, on some website the option is available, on others not. But the hardware acceleration was already enabled on those sites which allow to change this setting. So it seems that this hardware acceleation is broken with my flash. Any idea’s?

Have you tried what happens when you disable it?

You could also try out Google Chrome (not Chromium) which comes with a newer Flash built in.

Results with chrome are not better, disabling the hardware acceleration doesn’thelp neither. Is anyone experiencing the same issue? The choppy playback problem gets worse when the movie quality increases, espacially 720p and 1080 are unwatchable.

I have no flash problem with my nvidia cards and high video resolutions,
what exact model do you have and what driver version?

You need a powerful computer to watch flash full screen without
problems. Sometimes I want to watch something from TV, and the media
offers the download free in flash; but because of the problems I prefer
to download the same thing via emule as .avi instead. Their fault, IMHO.

Even on my notebook with onboard intel I do not have that problem (I
just mention because the sandy bridge is not a powerful video card), but
you could do a test with youtube videos by using smtube (it uses mplayer
for showing the video) to see if it is just flash related or if you have
a more generic problem.

Btw on my previous notebook (Eee PC 1201n with nvidia card) I remember
having choppy flash playback while every other video playback worked
like a charm even for high resolutions.

I have a geforce 7950 gt, driver version 304.43 from the nvidia repo. This hardware is definitely capable of rendering hd flash or regular flash video. On the same hardware with opensuse 11.4 there was no problem. On opensuse 12.1 there was no problem at first, until a software update of flash and firefox. After clean install of opensuse 12.2, the problem was still not fixed.

also, when i dowload a flash video with the flashgot firefox plugin, i can play the flv video full screen without a problem using smplayer. With the adobe flash player, video doesn’t even have to be fullscreen to take 100% cpu.

For those who have a working flash setup, which version are you running? I found this post saying adobe doesnt support hw acceleration no more. So why does it seem so few people complain about flash not working properly anymore.

I tried to make these symbolic links to both /usr/lib, /usr/lib32 and /usr/lib64 but hardware acceleration is still disabled. When I view the flash video options, it clearly says: software rendering and software decoding. This should be hardware rendering and hardware decoding.

Flash 11.2 wen released had problems in Linux with hardware acceleration (not just in nvidia - but probably most reported with this gpu)
There has since been a bug release which has corrected this for most people (not so long ago if I remember correctly).

Have you tried rolling back to an older Flash?
As I understand it, Adobe does have Opensuse rpms of older versions - there was a link in an earlier thread.

I have tried flash player 10.2 and 10.3 (downloaded from rpmbone.net) with 32bit firefox, but the problem is not solved. This is getting confusing. A flash update crippled the hardware accelleration, but when you revert to 10.x flash, the problem does not go away…

surely if that is the case then you can conclude that the problem is not with flash but with your hardware / driver configuration

Hardware is not the problem, same hardware worked fine for flash on opensuse 11.4.

as for the nvidia driver, i tried both the nvidia driver repository and the binary driver from nvidia website. Nothing changed to configuration. Both work great, except for flash.

I still think problem is caused by adobe somehow, not by nvidia.

If the file isn’t being streamed real time, have you tried downloading the file, then playing full screen?

That would eliminate network-related causes.

I’ve been running 12.2 on old hardware (nVidia 8600/256MBRAM) and played several YouTube Flash Videos full screen without a problem, only stuttering I get is when there are network issues.

I use Clipgrab to grab my youtube videos for later playback.
