I’m considering a mobo+processor+memory upgrade on my desktop: ASUS 775 P5GC-MX 1333 + core 2 duo + 4 GB DDR2 in dual channel.
Are there any issues with that memory size?
Is the OS11 DVD kernel OK for the core 2 duo? Any special care I should take?

Well I just installed OS1164 have a e8400 duo and 4gb ram works just fine no problems at all
The openSUSE installer will install the appropriate kernel to handle your platform. You shouldn’t have any issues with 4GB, particularly if you select the x86_64 (64-bit) platform. Though even 32-bit should be fine, since linux doesn’t have the 3GB limitation Win32 has, at least on modern processors over the last few years (supporting PAE).

Just one more curiosity. IIRC, with OS10.x the DVD image download was referred to as GM or Gold edition. There was no such thing when I downloaded OS11 just after it was made available. Will there be a GM image sometime, different from the original download? If so, what would these differences be?
