OS is Freezing

Hi,

I have recently downloaded opensuse 12.3 on a usb flash drive. The installation completes fine but once I get into the desktop and I go into firefox it freezes and goes to a purple screen. I have also downloaded a different distro before this and had the same issue. I have tried other ways to download so I know it isn’t the usb. Anybody know what could be causing this? thanks in advance…

You could try different versions, like 12.2 or the coming 13.1.

You could also run a memory check - it is an option in the installation
media. Run it for several hours, unless it fails earlier…

It’s not clear to me if you are running in live mode with a live dvd on a usb
If you have installed 12.3 to usb
If you used a bootable usb device to install openSUSE to a hdd

Your language is confusing

recently downloaded opensuse 12.3 on a usb flash drive

and

The installation completes fine but once I get into the desktop

I’m using a bootable usb. But I’m not really sure how it confuses you that I’m able to get into the desktop? I wouldn’t of been able to open firefox if I couldn’t access the desktop…

So you are using a bootable USB
But did you actually install for real to a HDD?

Yes it is installed on a HDD

but once I get into the desktop and I go into firefox it freezes and goes to a purple screen.
Is that as much as you can tell us?

Have you installed a graphics driver?

I have tried other ways to download so I know it isn’t the usb
Not sure how this is relevant ?

Does everything else work OK

What about if you try Chromium?

Is there anyway I can install the driver without going onto the opensuse website? Every other program installed on it works ok when I open it. I haven’t tried chrome yet. I downloaded ubuntu before this and it would freeze on login screen, so I’m not sure if firefox is the problem

Which driver?
What graphics card do you have?

Yes, it is possible to install it without going to any website, just by using zypper or YaST.

Processor: AMD Athlon™ Processor LE-1640 2700 Mhz

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

Ok, then do this in a terminal:
Run “uname -a” to check which kernel you are using. If it’s not kernel-desktop, replace “desktop” appropriately in the following.

Do this to install the driver:

sudo zypper ar ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.3/ nvidia
sudo zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG02 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop nvidia-computeG02

Or use YaST if you prefer:

  • Run YaST->Software Repositories, click on “Add”, select “Community Repositories” and add the “NVIDIA” repo there (should be the first in the list).
  • Enter YaST->Software Management, type “nvidia” in the search field and install the 3 packages mentioned above.

After a reboot, the nvidia driver should be used automatically.
