OS 15 Leap XFCE boot hang. NO Atheros wifi

I am not a linux expert but not a beginner either, just learning stuff a little at time.
So any provided advice should be without assumptions that i may already know what or how to do something.
Please advice me as i was a beginner. I know how to use vi & sudo.

And i read all the topics here about this problem, no solution so far or may require some kind of expert to do that
and no proper explanations how to. Tired of searching the web how to do this or that and not even suse has good help for some basic stuff.

Ok, here you go :
After kernel update to both 4.20.2.lp150.5 and 4.20.3.lp150.6 OpenSuSe will not boot.
I have already reinstalled a few times and the first time this happened when updating to 4.20.2 kernel and then everytime when installing updates after reinstalling.
So the kernel was last time (yesterday) updated from the original kernel 4.12.something.

Also the kernel firmware was updated and i’ve noticed it has caused problems with Atheros Wifis, but this computer has a Realtek PCIE-card and no onboard wifi.

  • No consoles, no graphical, only Ctrl-Alt-F10 shows where the boot stuck.

  • Will not boot to rescue mode not even with the original kernel.

  • Tried with no success

nouveau.modeset=0
acpi=off

  • Took off USB in the bios, no entry for acpi there. And no bluetooth.

Latest Nvidia drivers 390.something have not been the problem, everything was fine a for a weeks i’ve had
OS 15 (fresh install, not update of 42.3) and before kernel and firmware updates.

I even edited zypp.conf to save 4 kernels, running, oldest and the one from original install and it did not help
as in the latest update the boot stuck the same way with the original kernel.
After 4.20.2 kernel update some time ago i had the original 4.12… and could boot, but imagined that latest
updates could make things better. Unfortunately not.

Haven’t tried reinstalling grub, which i think is not the problem here.

Here is pictures of the boot or as far it gets. Had to take 2 as my phone camera did not focus properly

So what you suggest ?
Any ideas other than the kernel firmware ?

How to lock the firmware not be updated in next install ?
I lost the command for that …

How do i de-install / remove the bad kernel firmware (or other file/kernel) and install another ?
That is something that i have not yet found a good and proper guide.

I don’t understand why you blame kernel-firmware, don’t see that in the output. Furthermore, you mention Atheros in the title, where there is none.
I suspect a kernel update where the NVIDIA driver was not updated, so does not match the running kernel.

I’m not seeing those kernels in any of the standard repos. Where did you get them?

Also the kernel firmware was updated and i’ve noticed it has caused problems with Atheros Wifis, but this computer has a Realtek PCIE-card and no onboard wifi.

As far as I know, that firmware update is only a problem for some atheros cards. With what you describe, it should not affect your system.

Latest Nvidia drivers 390.something have not been the problem, everything was fine a for a weeks i’ve had
OS 15 (fresh install, not update of 42.3) and before kernel and firmware updates.

There have been reports of Nvidia woes with 4.20 kernels for Tumbleweed users. So it is not surpising if Leap 15.0 users have similar problems.

Haven’t tried reinstalling grub, which i think is not the problem here.

If you are getting as far as loading the kernel, then grub is not likely to be the problem.

How to lock the firmware not be updated in next install ?
I lost the command for that …

I’m doubting that the firmware is the problem.

However: for what you want to do, it is easiest to use Yast Software Management.
Search for kernel-firmware.

Click the “Versions” tab, and select the version that you want.

After that is installed, go back into Yast Software Management, and again search for it. Then, on that line, right-click and there should be an option to lock the package. (It looks as if the option is “Protected - do not modify”).

Thanks for the replies.
I ended up re-installing and blocked kernel (4.20.3.lp150.6) and kernel-firmware updates in yeast.
But still yeast wants to update to the 4.20.3 kernel and the reason is that repo where the kernel(s) come from is build.opensuse.org/home:regataos, which is needeed for other software.
Thanks for pointing that out, i’ll mark that repo not to be used.

The reason to problems could be exatly what nurpht said about “a kernel update where the NVIDIA driver was not updated, so does not match the running kernel”.
So next step after updating everything else i do security updates and the right kernel & firmware updates.
Fortunately haven’t installed the NVidia drivers yet, keeping the original from system install until everything else is ok.

I think this is going be 1 step at time kind of thing and will notify the results, when done.

May I suggest that you try changing the repo priorities. You can do that with Yast Software Repositories.

The default is for all repos to have priority 99. A lower number is a better priority.

If you change the priority of “home:regataos”, then it probably won’t try to install kernels from there. (I could be wrong, though – you will only know by trying it). Make the priority of that repo 100 or higher. It should still update your other software from that repo.

And note that it is “yast” (or “Yast”), not “yeast”.

Both your screenshots reference a problem loading bluez, the KDE system for supporting Bluetooth.
At least for now, recommend hardware disabling BT, then you can boot and troubleshoot.
(Technically speaking, it’s possible for your BT and WiFi both be implemented by the same chip, but YMMV)

Slight modification, bluez is used across all Linux today, not specific to a Desktop. I think I first saw it supported by KDE before others which is where I probably got my mis-perception.

TSU

Thank you both.

Of course yast  I write faster than think and my native laguage is not english, so errors happen. And not going to apologize my english >:)

Yes i have to change the priorities, didn’t even remember such thing as not used to do that. Still learning Linux basics.

There is no bluetooth or wifi on motherboard, this is an older one, low end AM3+ mobo. Also no UEFI.
Could it be that the wrong kernel did that error ?

I see a Realtek WiFi detected.
You might also run lsusb to see if anything more is there connected through the USB controllers.
Yes, I see the age of your board, it still has an ISA bus…

TSU

Ok updates done, everything fine. Thaks again for the replies and good advice.

Tsu2, actually no ISA, but 2 PCI + the normal 2 PCIe’s.
I took off everyhing else but mouse and keyboard connected to USB’s when did the troubled updates.
