oS 12.3 KDE: Cannot access Dolphin

Dolphin just will. not. work! When I attach an external HDD, it gets recognized but I am unable to access the directories/files! THIS IS DRIVING ME UP THE WALL!!!>:(

Are you referring to a USB-connected HDD?

deano_ferrari
Yes, I am.

Does it appear in the KDE device notifier? That should give you options to mount, including ‘auto-mounting’ if that is what you prefer.

It’s probably NTFS format
What make is it?
If possible can you use Windows to scan the drive for errors and be sure to ‘Safely Remove’. Then try in openSUSE again.

I’m sorry; I wasn’t clear – the USB external HDD is just an example. For example: Configure Desktop doesn’t work, and I don’t know why!>:(

deano_ferrari
I tried doing that. very. thing. And Dolphin still failed!

How exactly does ‘Configure Desktop’ not work? Have you Unlocked the Widgets? This is needed for some actions.

Saying it’s broke does not tell us anything. We need more info to know how it i broke for you. It all works fine here so. Why do you say it does not work. Does it no start? Not do what you expect? runs then crashes?? Try as we might we can not see over your shoulder.

With your HDD device plugged in, can you provide the output of

fdisk -l

and

dmesg|tail

I took the laptop to a Linux Users Group meeting and I showed the experts the below:

~> dolphin
dolphin: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libnepomukcore.so.4: file too short
~>

After looking at the above, the gurus began googling the error message and – eventually – discovered that libnepomukcore.so.4 had to be deleted and then installed. Evidently it was not so much an openSUSE problem as it was a KDE problem.

By the way, this was all done from the command line. (well, except for the googling, anyway)

I hope that the above explanation is comprehensible.

The file probably got truncated some how. I’d check my disks if it happened to me and see if they are having problems. Use smartctl to check the disk you can get the options by man smartctl
