This morning my OpenSuSE system boots to a plain white screen, with mouse and keyboard operational. I can switch to any of my 4 workspaces, but these appear as command line interface only. I tried invoking ‘startx’ but receive a Fatal Server Error telling me ‘Server is already active for display 0’, among other things.
I have very limited knowledge of Linux, so I do not know how to recover from this.
I noticed yesterday, before shutting down the system, that my attempts to use the ‘Mobius Gears’ (?) as a screen saver seemed to be a bit flaky - the system locked up for a while before displaying the screen saver. Could this have caused the problem?
The login prompt is telling me that I am running OS 11.0.42 (i586) Alpha0 Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae
Some advice would be most welcome.
