I’m running OS 11.2, KDE x86_64. (dual boot with XP.) After doing a clean install upgrade to 11.2 on my system there is one problem that’s come up. The machine does not shut down the way it under 11.1.
OpenSuse goes through a normal system shutdown, the fans, hard drives, and lights all go out just like normal – except for the light on the ethernet interface. It glows a nice steady green. This did not happen in 11.1, or in Windows XP. The only way to shut it off is turning off the power at the UPS, or unplugging the cord from the cpu – things I would rather not resort to if I can avoid it.
I’m not sure where to start looking for the problem on this one. Any help appreciated.
Not sure if the light staying on is a ‘problem’. It may be a part of openSUSE 11.2 functionality.
Inside my CPU casing, I also have a network light that glows green; and it’s lighted all the time, even when the system shuts down. Previously I used Fedora and XP, and with both the light used to stay on even when the system had shut down. Unplugging the computer did shut off the light, of course.
I posted this mainly because this behavior started after doing the upgrade from OS 11.1 to OS 11.2.
It’s a minor issue, yet annoying, since the green LED does a wonderful job lighting up the bedroom wall at night. lol! That was why I noticed it in the first place. Guess I can “fix” it with some black electrical tape . . .

On most my systems, that light is a function of the BIOS - “wake on LAN”
leaves it on all the time. Obvious since the NIC has to be powered to
actually wake the machine up
On some of the machines here, the light depends on the hibernate mode, also
set in BIOS.
And one old Dell leaves the light on anytime the Ethernet cable is plugged
in - the only way to turn it off is to unplug the cable or pull the power
cord.

It’s my experience that the network card’s light stays lit when the system
is off on all OSes I’ve seen (Linux, Win, & Mac). I’m surprised that it
wasn’t for you.
