ordinary DVD-ROM drive doesn't work under 11.2 / KDE 4.3.5

Hi all,

it is NOT a hardware problem: the openSUSE 11.2 installer DVD
boots fine from that drive, and the very same drive and DVD
work just fine under openSUSE 10.2, openSUSE 10.3,
openSUSE 11.1 (with KDE 3), and an old Windows
(I have a triple boot with currently 11.2, 10.2, Windows on a
Pentium III Katmai, Intel Mainboard, with 500 MB RAM).

K3B says the drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1212.

It is attached to the internal IDE bus and configured master (/dev/sr0).

When I insert a DVD in that drive under 11.2 (KDE 4.3.5)
the light of the drive goes on a few times. But different than
under 11.1 (KDE 3.5), the inserted DVD neither is mounted
nor appears in ‘My Computer’ (sysinfo:/).
After the light of the DVD drive finally stays dark, the DVD can be
ejected manually, which is a further hint.

Entering the DVD in a NEC DVD burner configured slave
(still 11.2/KDE4.3.5, same machine, same IDE bus, /dev/sr1)
the DVD at least appears in ‘My Computer’ (sysinfo:/).

Any idea ?

Is it alone on the IDE cable?

Is it only DVD’s that don’t work or is it the same with CD’s?

Hi caf4926,

just tried it out.

Funny enough: with a CD (that one was recognized as an UDF CD)
the Toshiba DVD drive works under 11.2 !

Does this mean you are OK then?

Hi caf4926,

sorry, but not really, because I would like to be able to access
the openSUSE installer DVD in the Toshiba DVD-ROM, while
having another DVD with repositories in the NEC drive …

I see one problem here: AFAIK the burning device should be configured Master, the DVD-ROM should be the slave. Still, I have had some strange problems in the past with two DVD devices on one IDE.
Don’t you have enough diskspace to put iso’s of the DVD’s on, that would make things a lot faster too.

I have had some strange problems in the past with two DVD devices on one IDE.

I asked about this, but did I miss a reply?!

Nope, there was none. I specifically asked for two CD/DVD devices. Went upstairs to my son to make sure (he’s got a NEC burner and an LG DVD-ROM). He says he has no problems at all, took a look inside, the NEC is the master, the LG the slave. According to my son, he could not play games on winders that needed DVD’s, when it was the other way around. Did not remember.

your dispute, OK.

There however is a point:

up to openSUSE 11.1 with KDE3 (and under Windows …)
evth. worked smoothly.

Just that changed under openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.3.5.

I deem KDE 4 the reason.

Still I need help, if I want to go on with openSUSE 11.2.

I have spent so many hours on KDE 4 under 11.2 !

Should I skip ?

In dolphin, go to ‘View’ > ‘Panels’
make sure you have ‘Places’

Because FYI CD’s and DVD’s do not auto-mount in 11.2
Even though an inserted DVD/CD is not mounted, it should show in ‘Places’

Hi caf4926,

my posting is about 2 points.

(i) The Toshiba DVD-ROM drive still doesn’t work with a DVD under
openSUSE 11.2.

(ii) Thank you very much indeed for your handy hints about monunting
devices under KDE 4, which solved a 2nd problem that I had !

OK first point (ii).

  1. I place a DVD in the NEC DVD burner.
  2. Light of the NEC drive blinks.
  3. DVD appears in sysinfo:/ (Konqueror) but isn’t mounted,
and CAN NOT be mounted from there (right mouse button
on the DVD icon/link doesn’t give the needed entry in the
    appearing context menu).
  4. I proceed according to your hints, open, a dolphin window,
go to ‘View’ > ‘Panels’, select ‘Places’.
The icons of different devices occur.
  5. Wow, a click on the DVD icon mounts the disk/device,
and I’ll probably know as well now, how to mount other
Linux partitions on a 2nd SCSI HD under KDE 4.

I was frustrated beforehand, because trying to mount the DVD
on a root console resulted in:

(Host):~ # mount /dev/sr1
mount: can’t find /dev/sr1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

However, after mounting the DVD through dolphin

(Host):~ # umount /dev/sr1
(Host):~ # eject /dev/sr1

work fine.

An inconsistent and illogical aspect of KDE 4 in my eyes is,
that the same rules do obviously NOT apply to USB devices
shown in sysinfo:/ (Konqueror), because other than for different
devices, a single click there with the left (not right) mouse button
does the job and mounts the USB device (HD, Stick) !

I would wish that the KDE developers under KDE4 would give back
to Konqueror its functionality that it had under KDE3, instead of forcing
everybody to abstain from a stable & handy browser that consumes
less horizontal space on my 17 inch display than dolphin does.

Probably the demand to still run KDE3 under openSUSE 11.2
would significantly reduce then.

I mean, people will usually have more than one WEB browser.
Why not having more than one Browser for the file system ?
Why imposing these restrictions, i.e. removing vital features
from Konqueror ?

Nobody would ever come to the idea of trying to force people
to switch from e.g. ‘firefox’ to a new browser ‘waterwolf’ with a
completely new handling and layout.
Additional extensions, sure, OK.
But one usually learns how to work with a certain App, and thus
becomes faster and more efficient.

OK second point (i).

  1. I place the same DVD in the Toshiba DVD-ROM.
  2. Light of the Toshiba drive blinks.
  3. DVD does NOT appear in sysinfo:/ (Konqueror).
  4. I proceed according to your hints, open, a new dolphin window
    (‘View’ > ‘Panels’, ‘Places’ activated).
  5. The DVD in the Toshiba DVD-ROM does NOT appear
    in dolphin either.
  6. I manually eject the DVD.

This morning I used this Toshiba DVD-ROM drive to copy data
to an USB HD drive under openSUSE 10.2
(as I wrote I have a multiboot, so rebooting 10.2 or 11.2 currently
is easy for me).

In sum: the Toshiba drive works under 10.2 (KDE3)
while it does not under 11.2 (KDE4).

Many thanks again
Mike

Did you address the situation of data cables? If you connect the Toshiba drive alone, as sole device on the data cable. Does it work.

FYI:
KDE4.4> has now added a feature to be like kde3 was, with auto mount on insert of cd/dvd’s
You can update to 4.4 if you like, but it’s Factory. But I have it on 2 computers and it’s perfect. Up to you.

Hi caf4926,

I first have been a bit reluctant to open my midi tower again
in order to unplug the NEC drive, because of the always remaining
risk of hardware damage by electrostatic discharges.

However, I found the point too interesting in the end, and because
it would probably help to get a more definite result.

Hardware configuration now:
Toshiba DVD-ROM alone on the IDE bus, attached to the last plug
of the IDE cable and configured master, as before (plug in the middle of
the IDE cable not connected, i.e. NEC device disconnected).

Multiboot system (see previous postings in this thread).

First booting openSUSE 10.2:

  • DVD (did chose openSUSE 11.2 installer DVD) is regocnised
    and mounted.

  • Data CD is regocnised and mounted.

Then booting openSUSE 11.2 (i.e. a few minutes later,
hardware configuration unchanged):

  • DVD is neither regocnised, nor can it be mounted using new dolphin
window (i.e. DVD isn’t even shown in ‘View’ > ‘Panels’, ‘Places’).

  • Data CD however, as beforehand, IS recognised and CAN be mounted
    using dolphin.

In the end, in my view, evth. else would have been illogical, because
as well with the hardware configuration with the NEC device (slave)
connected to the plug in the middle of the IDE cable I already WAS able
to boot from the openSUSE 11.2 installer DVD and WAS able to access
both IDE devices under openSUSE 10.2, 10.3 & 11.1.

In sum: after the NEC DVD burner had been unplugged, the behaviour
with respect to the Toshiba DVD-ROM device is exactly the same as
beforehand, under both, openSUSE 10.2 and openSUSE 11.2 .

Now I will have to open up my midi tower again …

Thank you for the hint concerning KDE4.4 !
Sounds good !

But because I still connect by modem (stoneage …) maybe I’ll wait until
openSUSE 11.3 appears - which should hopefully comprise KDE4.4 !

Best wishes
Mike

If you boot with the failsafe option from grub menu, does it behave differently?

failsafe - never used that option beforehand.

Booting 10.2 with failsafe option wasn’t necessary,
because recognising the drives/disks in 10.2 already
took place smoothly, even if both devices were connected
to the IDE bus, right?

Actual hardware configuration still reduced, i.e. with the
Toshiba DVD-ROM connected to the IDE bus only
(i.e. NEC drive still disconnected).

Booting 11.2 failsafe.
A bit slower.

Behaviour with respect to the devices is still the same,
i.e. DVD placed first in the Toshiba device
can not be accessed in any way.

The CD, however, can be accessed and mounted.

Would mean: no effect by booting failsafe.

Hi
Have you tried with jumpers set to cable select on the devices? The
other thing to do is in the BIOS enable the ESCD option so it resets
at your next boot.

Hi malcolmlewis,

first, thank you for your reply.

However, there is one point:

You write about devices - means plural, or more than one.

However, as reported above, yesterday, after a later posting
of caf4926, I opened up my midi tower, and physically
UNPLUGGED the other device (NEC burner),
and had the Toshiba DVD-ROM drive as the ONLY device on the
IDE bus (at which at max 2 devices can be connected).

So actually, the subject in fact is the configuration with the
Toshiba as the ONLY optical drive connected to that IDE bus.

Still it didn’t work.

On the other hand, the openSUSE 11.2 installer DVD booted
fine from the Toshiba drive, and the problems occurred only
after 11.2 was booted.

How could I change the hardware configuration anymore,
when the Toshiba drive is the only single drive left on that IDE bus,
in order to get that single drive working ?

Isn’t the installed 11.2 the reason ?

Best wishes
Mike

Hi
Ahh my bad, thought they were both still plugged in. So does the
following command show the device;

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom

and

lsmod |grep cdrom

Hi malcolmlewis,

before I proceeded, I unplugged and replugged
the IDE cable at the Toshiba drive and on the
mainboard, to make sure that there are no
contact problems here.

Only Toshiba drive plugged, at the end of the cable.

Output is given below for 6 different cases:

  • openSUSE 11.2 without disk
  • openSUSE 11.2 with DVD
  • openSUSE 11.2 with CD
  • openSUSE 10.2 (multiboot) without disk
  • openSUSE 10.2 with DVD
  • openSUSE 10.2 with CD

Best wishes
