Someone please make opensuse based distro for usb-stick -
dd copy of livecd does not work.
There are usb-stick specific distros - slax, puppy
Hi
You can make your own at http://susestudio.com

I get:

Hi
Just apply for one, it shouldn’t take long.

USB stick doesn’t boot. I didn’t even expect it to boot …
going to troubleshoot error messages now.
Are you following the instructions here:
SUSE Studio Disc Image Howtos - openSUSE
If the dd method fails, try using kiwi-tools-imagewriter. This will do the job in a few clicks.
Be sure and check the boot order in your BIOS. The USB drive will have to precede the HDD.

Both the 11.2 gnome and ked live versions run from usb stick. Just use dd to copy the iso file to the stick.

I can confirm this it simply works for me with dd on several machines. So I
think the OP has another problem if it does not work as expected.
+1, also from SD card.
I wish there was application that clones my current opensuse system from /dev/sda5 to usb-stick and make it writable and it would boot
This should maybe go in support forums now … but …
booting openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-Build0515-i686.iso from USB stick works fine … but …
I created suse studio usb image … dd .raw image to USB /dev/sdb
Booting usb stick … I get this -
“Failed to find MBR identifier” - Google Search](http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=“Failed+to+find+MBR+identifier”&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=)
kernel /boot/linux.vmx
initrd /boot/initrd.vmx

...
Loading KIWI OEM Boot-system ...
Including required kernel modules
Searching for boot device
Failed to find MBR identifier
rebootException

ok this is something different. Just a guess:
If you use unetbootin to create a live usb from this suse studio created
image, does that work?
unetbootin usb-stick installation of openSUSE-11.2-usb-gnome.i686-2.8.0-Build363.2.raw wont boot beyond gray boot screen.
I guess it’s not configured correctly and kernel will not load …
contents of usb-stick
martin@hpsuse:/media/stuff/TEMP> ls /media/disk
0.img extlinux.conf lost+found ubnfilel.txt vesamenu.c32
1 extlinux.sys syslinux.cfg ubnpathl.txt
I have done the usual …
download some packages, read a manual, now read some more, troubleshoot error messages, jump-through-the-hoops, do-the-copagabanga, throw salt over left shoulder, throw pepper over right shoulder, reboot, count 1-2-3
I’m gonna stick to puppy linux on USB for now.
I share martinmartini’s frustration. I followed (carefully) all the opensuse specific directions to make a bootable usb stick. When they failed, I did them over again. I went to (some poster’s) blog who failed with the suse directions, but succeeded with unetbootin. That was even worse for me; it seems unetbootin removed the boot flag whereas dd did not. I re-formatted (twice) the stick to vfat, just in case there was a problem with that. I tried with and without a second partition. I tried copying the iso to both /dev/sdc and /dev/sdc1. I tried on 3 different machines.
Following the opensuse directions, I get the same error each time: isolinux.bin missing or corrupted. Then it proceeds to try a network connection. It fails to make a DHCP connection and quits to a blinking cursor. The path on this stick to isolinux.bin is CDROM/boot/i386/loader/isolinux.bin (only the opensuse directions make this stick appear to be a CD.) I’ve tried with 3 different iso’s. I can burn these same downloaded iso’s to CD and they work.
Could there be a permissions problem? Is there a special iso that is different? With so many people having success, I’m sure that there is something I am missing.
