opesuse 12.1 - kde won't start?

Hi I installed opensuse 12.1 last week, and everything has worked great. Until this morning. I should mention that I know very little about Linux, I have just been using it as a kde. Today I started my computer and it tried to boot the kde however it failed and loaded the failsafe which seems to be working fine. I have rebooted several times always with the same result. Is there any way I can fix this with out having to reinstall. and lose stuff on my drive?
Ant help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul.

With out knowing more it is just guessing

What Video do you have? Did you install a proprietary driver for that video?
Just guessing that you may have had a kernel update in which case you may need to re-install the driver.

Pay attention to what is being updated!

That is very ambiguous. Especially where you say that the failsafe works, this could possibly mean two different things. Firstly, it could mean a failsafe KDE session. You select this at the login-screen after the system has alreday booted. Secondly, it could refer to the whole system being booted with failsafe settings. This is selected from the Grub menu before the system boots.

Needless to say that this makes a huge difference in trying to find out where your problem lies.

Considering that apparantly your system and all had been working fine and still works with failsafe (regardless of which one exactly) I think it’s definitely fixable.

You might also want to check the GRUB entries and post an output here…If necessary, reinstall GRUB.
