I’m trying to install LEAP 42.1 via a USB stick to my SSD which currently has Windows 10 installed, but it is not selectable in the installation (other than expert mode, but I don’t feel comfortable using that without guidance). When choosing it, it gives me the error message “operation not permitted on disk /dev/sda”.
My goal is to erase the entire SSD and replace Windows with openSUSE.
By default, the install will look for free, unpartitioned and unformatted space.
You can prepare your SSD by first wiping using a utility like gparted live (which is handy to have around for emergencies, too).
The following is to a LiveCD version of gparted, just boot it up and you’ll have an easy, intuitive way to do anything on any detected disks including wiping clean.
IMO that’s easier than going through the re-partitioning steps.
PS. You may want to see if your disk manager provides a “secure erase” utility… In the special case of SSDs, a “secure erase” not only marks the traps for erasure but also does the equivalent of a TRIM to make the traps available for writing.
