OpenSUSE11, KDE, Oppen Office, Kaffeine anf other problems

Hi everybody, well I am new on this and I am trying to start working with OpenSUSE and Linux. Well guys, this is your big chance of making your good action of the day; I ahve four questions and believe me I would thank you so much. So far I have the following questions:

Kaffeine: I have read the welcome thread on the multimedia forum and I have gone to the one click solution for installing the MP3 and MPG pluggings for Kaffeine. The first problem is that the installation process asked me for the installation CD which is in the computer; the installations package wants to open some file related to some template of the Oppen Office; but it give an error saying it does not find the file even when I can see file using Dolphin. The URL that the installation package is using is cd:///?devices=/dev/sr0; I do not know if this is Ok, how Can I tell the path to the file, the file is there in the CD but it seems to me that URL is not good, how can I introduce the correct path to the file?. Ok, I continue with the plug in installations clicking on skip, then it gives me a problem with the JAVA version, I have an older version so I select downgrade to continue with the process, it installation package YAST2, continues with the installation and at the end says everything is fine, but the Kaffeine is still giving me the same problem when I try to reproduce some avi or mpeg format, what to do??

OpenOffice: I would like to upgrade my openoffice to the next version; the version that comes to OpenSUSE11 does not have any upgrade option in the help menu, so I can not make the upgrading this way. The OpenOffice page says that I must uninstall the older version and the install the new one, is it safe to uninstall the OpenOffice version that comes with OpenSUSE???, should I proceed? How??

Format problem: I have an external HD, the Konwqueror browser shows it with vfat format and does not open it. How can I see the files in that external HD. I have a mounted ntfs partition that I can read, but I can not write it; I read in some forum that I must mount it with ntfs-3g or something like that in order to be able to write on it. How can I do it?

Installation new software problems: I have installed some software like skype which come in an rpm format, very nice, the installation is easy. I tried also to install the Thunderbird but it comes in another format (tar) which I think is some kind of compressed folder… How can I install the program from that format???

I’d disable the CD if you have a good internet connection. In Yast, Software, Software Repositories, highlight the CD, uncheck “Enabled”. Make sure the repositories for openSUSE-11.0-Oss and openSUSE-11.0-Non-Oss have “enabled” checked.
Try again.

> OpenOffice:

There’s a repository for it. I’m not sure if it is in the predefined Community repositories you see in Yast; if not, here is the link, amongst a lot of others:
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories

Once you added the repo, you can update through Yast easily.

See the link above, there’s a repository for Mozilla, which contains Thunderbird. When you add it, the newer versions of Thunderbird (and Firefox etc.) will appear in Yast. There’s hardly ever the need to install software from tarballs.

As for rpms, I usually put them all in one folder and create an “rpm only” repository in Yast’s repository manager.
