hi,
i have recently installed opensuse11.1 on my machine which already contain windowsXP partition. But when i try to restart on window from linux every thing go wrong and i even loose all OSs. Is it a bug or i have missed some configuration:’(
If you have multiple hard drives:
Grub “sees” drives differently than you may assume it is and thereby messes up the boot loader menu, but this is becoming less common.
For quite a while, grub would see IDE drives first and then SATA drives. So if your /boot was on a SATA, and your boot order in your BIOS was set for the SATA to go first, that “could” result in a problem, requiring you to re install the boot order, or change your boot order to match grub, etc.
As this is a BIOS issue, we will only be able to point you in the right direction. The simplest way to test this theory is to restart your computer, pay attention to the screen when it first comes on and look for the BIOS options for entering setup, or displaying a boot menu.
Initially you will be looking for the Boot menu. On many motherboards its, one of: F11, F12, F2.
If you can get than menu up see if you can boot from different drives and see which ones work.
If your drives are well, you should be able to boot from any active bootable partition on the drive directly, without the use of the grub boot loader.
If all the OS’s come up then you will have to reinstall the grub boot loader.
If you installed Windows AFTER Linux:
You should have read the docs. Windows likes being installed first and being on the first drive in the boot order. If will automatically over write the Master Boot Record (MBR) and in doing so will destroy your grub loader.
This can be easily fixed by reinstalling the grub loader. There are plenty of “dual boot” issue posts in these and all Linux distro forums.
If you just installed and manually set up your drives:
You could simple have deleted your old partitions, including those of the other OS’s.
I hope this gives you a starting point to start looking. Remember to provide as much relevant information as possible, like what exactly is coming up on the screen as you boot, etc.
thanks for the quick reply.
so far i was using open opensuse10.3 but haven’t face such a problem so i don’t think it’s a matter fo bios but i 'll dig deaply.
