Hey all, Im new here, I have a Mac that I use for my search engine (I’ve made a search engine using iWeb) but Im thing about getting a PC to install OpenSuse on it, can anyone tell me what PC type I should get, I want it to be cheap.
The best way might be to build it yourself, so you can look for very Linux compatible hardware.
Well perhaps we should start on the ground floor.
“a PC”…Are you talking about a desktop or a laptop?
Strahlex has good advice if you’re looking at a desktop. As for laptops…although hardware support has broadened considerably in the last 18 months…the easiest route is to look for Intel hardware. Especially with wireless chipsets. Since Intel pieces are very popular (“its got Centrino!” and all that salesperson jazz) then you shouldn’t have difficultly finding one at a competitive price.
Fill in the details of what you’re looking for and we can help you further. Although depending on your use cases…why not just install openSUSE on your Apple machine? Either in dual-boot or via virtualization?
Agree completely, if you just want to try out OpenSUSE (or any other operating system for that matter), a virtual machine is definately the way to go. By installing on a virtual machine, you can play with the new OS to your hearts content without having to buy a new PC, or jeopardize your current installation.
Be aware, there are limitations with using virtual machines. Your processor needs to support hardware virtualization. ( you can use a processor without hardware virtualization, however you will be limited by the types of guest operating systems you are able to install).
support for 3D acceleration inside the virtual machine varies between the different virtualization softwares out there. (VMware Workstation supports up to DirectX 9.0, last I checked)
MIDI is another one that will not work in a virtual machine.
Overall, if you are just trying out openSUSE, go with a virtual machine, that way if you do not like it, you have not spent the money on new hardware!
