For all of you that have been wishing you could accelerate your virtual Linux desktops as well as real Linux desktops (via compiz-fusion) without a lot of wrangling, you are now one giant step closer to being able to do just that. As of RC1 of VMWare Workstation 6.5 for Windows hosts, 3D acceleration of guests is a radio-button away. (It simply requires support of DirectX 9.0C or later on the host.) I am, in fact, posting this from an openSuSE 11 guest (Windows Vista Ultimate x86 host) with compiz-fusion installed.
I’ll likely continue the torture-testing of VMWare 6.5 with other guests (especially Solaris and/or Windows guests).
