opensuse V12.3-64 ==> /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed

opensuse V12.3-64, gnome

I’m trying to print the “current page” from a pdf using Evince,
and get this error window

  /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed

I did a zypper up, then using Yast Printer,
I have deleted then added, one after the other, every printer driver listed (6), no joy.

The OS sees the printer during the configuration.

Then I downloaded hplip-3.13.10 and did the make-and-install-it yourself, again no joy.

Is there a secret handshake?, rebooting, disconnecting the USB cable, logging out required?

The printer is an HP Deskjet 940c, 10 years young, prints fine with Windows and Mac.
