OpenSuSE 11.4/64 geeft problemen bij de aansturing van een externe SDLT-tapedrive aan een Proliant DL380-G4.
In eerste instantie lijkt alles O.K.
mt -f /dev/st0 status geeft het gewenste resultaat.
tar cvf /dev/st0 . (vanuit b.v. /usr) geeft een aantal files weer en daarna hangt de boel
nadat e.e.a is uitgetimed geeft ook mt geen resultaten meer.
mt: /dev/st0: rmtopen failed: No such file or directory (/dev/st0 bestaat wel)
Ook indien er gebruik wordt gemaakt van de rescue-mode (boot van DVD), blijft het probleem bestaan.
Echter bij rescue-mode vanuit 11.3/64 (of 10.3/64) werkt alles O.K.

Die computer uitvoer graag zo compleet mogelijk, dus de prompt, het commando en wat er dan volgt. Bijv:

Ik zie in ieder geval dit, al moet ik zeggen dat tapedrives voor mij meer dan 10 jaar geleden zijn.

deze is logisch, de “/” tussen “/dev” en “st0” mist.
IK ben het met Knurpht eens dat je laatste regel een typo bevat en dus niets zegt. Maar die unrecovarable error krijg je dus wel, en kennelijk bij herhaling. Gebeurt dat iedere keer op dezelfde plek (in je listing van files gegenereerd door het v commando)?
Indien het telkens ergens anders gebeurt lijkt het mij een hardware probleem. Kijk dan in ieder geval of de kabels goed zijn aangedrukt en zo.

Indien je dezelfde akties uitvoert m.b.v. de rescue-mode van een SuSE11.3 (of 10.3) werkt het O.K.
Dus de kabels zijn O.K. en het lijkt dus ook geen HW-probleem.
Indien de tar wordt gestart komen er een aantal files voorbij en daarna wordt het stil todat de boel uit-timed (~5 min)
Kan op het ogenblik even niet bij de tape (i.v.m. backups in het weekeinde)
Dinsdag zal ik nog eens een poging wagen en je het resultaat en evt. de log-files posten.

Er moet dus iets veranderd zijn bij de overgang van 11.3 naar 11.4

Ik denk dat je gelijk hebt. Helaas is dit een moeilijk te definiëren probleem. Als het “zomaar” onderweg stopt zou dat bijv. een timing zaak kunnen zijn en dat is heel moeilijk aan te melden bij de maker van een driver. Speciaal als hij niet exeact dezelfde hardware heeft om e.e.a. te testen.
Misschien dat je met bovenstaande logings iets kunt aantonen (vooral de eerste regel van de laatste set).
@Knurpht, heb jij een idee Gertjan? Een bug report?
Had het nog niet geschreven, maar ik kom tot dezelfde conclusie: een bug report.

het probleem ligt nog iets anders dan ik omschreven had.
Testen d.m.v. de rescue-modes van de cd’s leverde de volgende resultaten:
OpenSuSE 10.3:
Tape is gewoon te gebruiken, ook mt offline werkt normaal, resultaat van mt status daarna: mt: /dev/st0: No medium found.
Herladen van de tape werkt ook naar behoren.
OpenSuSE 11.3:
Tape is te gebruiken voor backup, status werkt O.K.
Echter mt offline en daarna status opvragen levert:
mt: /dev/st0: rmtioctl failed: No such device
Daarna is een reboot de enige mogelijkheid om de tape weer aan te spreken.
OpenSuSE 11.4:
Tape is niet te gebruiken voor backup, echter (in eerste instantie) werkt status wel.
Offline zetten levert hetzelfde op als 11.3
(Extra test m.b.v. Ubuntu 10.10 levert overigens dezelfde resultaten op als 11.3)

Overigens ook wel interressant om te melden: OpenSuSE 11.2 heeft geen problemen met ofline (en reloaden v/d/ tape) → dmesg.3 toegevoegd.

een bug-report is blijkbaar de weg om te gaan, maar wordt er nu van mij aktie verwacht of is nu alles in kannen en kruiken ?
(nog niet eerder met dit bijltje gehakt, maar ik er is al een tijdje nix meer gebeurd op het forum…)

Een bugreport kun je inderdaad het beste zelf maken. Wij kunnen jouw logfiles etc. niet posten als bijlagen. Op openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE staan instructies over hoe je dat moet doen.
Even terzijde: geweldig hoe je elke keer ondersteunende materie meepost. Als iedereen dat zo consequent en verzorgd zou doen, waren de threads in de forums hooguit 25% van de lengte die ze nu hebben. Ik moet ook zeggen, dat het voor mij 11 jaar geleden is dat ik voor het laatst met tapes te maken had (Exabyte, waar middels een “verbouwde DV” camera maar liefst 2 GB naar toe kon worden geschreven).
