OpenSUSE uses less then 20% of my installed memory

Every time I boot openSUSE - yes between bios (after booting from grub) and before the desktops shows up. I’ll try to check my BIOS

Nothing. There is nothing about graphics card. This BIOS is weird - only some info about CPU,booting, hard drive settings, enabling devices like bluetooth and card reader… Allocated memory: 4096MB

Hi
So when you get to the desktop, run nvidia-settings, does it show info
about the graphics card?

Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Kernel 2.6.32.29-0.3-default
up 1 day 14:35, 2 users, load average: 0.05, 0.11, 0.15
GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - Driver Version: 260.19.26

Can’t be done.
I have something called NVIDIA settings SERVER X - I can’t fire it up, because after waiting 10 seconds (cursor shows that its loading) it automatically closes …

and:

ant6@linux-57ot:~> nvidia-settings
Błąd w obliczeniach zmiennoprzecinkowych

I have Polish version and whats funny most of the interface is in my language (e.g. Log out is in English… :stuck_out_tongue: )
Its something like: (google translate) Error in floating point calculations or maybe error in counting those floats… I have no idea what they are :frowning:

Hi
I would roll back to the original kernel version, as we know know the ram shortfall reason. Then lets work on the nvidia driver, then your other issues.

When you roll back, confirm the installed nvidia driver strings matches the kernel version.

Does your BIOS has an option which might point to something close to: “Fix memory holes” ?

May I ask two questions?

  1. How do I roll back? Do you mean rolling back using earlier saved copy of my system files made e.g. in yast - there are some recovery options? I don’t have any .tar files saved.
  2. Why should I do something with my graphics card driver? It’s working have read here that I need to switch to PAE kernel or so but last time I did that I have lost my drivers. I don’t have too much time at the moment and I would prefer an easier solution or leaving it so until I’ll have some time to ‘play’ with my wifi drivers and other again.

ad.1 or maybe I should get rid of those?:

Hi
So your 3D graphics is working ok?

Roll back to the original kernel version you were using, but if things are working on the graphics side (strange that nvidia-settings isn’t working), leave it alone

So your only issue now is pulseaudio on KDE?

Yes, pulseaudio is sometimes taking 25% of my processor (my cpu has hyperthreating or so and instead of 2 core all OSs see 4). Additionally when I run Amarok and teamspeak3 I can hear weird noise and sometimes music(amarok) and voice(ts3) become metallic sounds/alien sounds… I have no idea how to describe it :stuck_out_tongue:

Going back to NVIDIA for a second… it was working correctly because I have just uninstalled all packages with word ‘nvidia’ and its looking horrible… moreover, the sysinfo: shows that there is no support for 3d or 3d driver, nevermind. I’ll install them again and it should be fine.

Hi
OK, then what about cpu frequencies are they running at full speed when needed?

cpufreq-info

If the command not found install cpufreq-utils and then try the command, is it set to ondemand?

Another issue :frowning: (but I must say that NVIDIA drivers are working property after re-installation  )

Hi
Wonder if they are stuck at a slow speed, what about the output from;

Checking CPUFreq modules unused

Hi
My ASUS 1000HE which is the N280 (2 cores) uses the cpufreq, then it will slow them down when not much load. Interesting that the 330 isn’t using it…

What I suggest is to open a terminal and run the command top and keep an eye on your memory, swap etc when running teamspeak and try and identify what process are running and memory usage (also check the cpu output frequencies) when it slows down.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
2480 ant6 20 0 285m 6452 5112 S 45 0.2 0:18.42 pulseaudio
19439 ant6 20 0 356m 37m 20m S 30 1.2 0:13.93 ts3client_linux

pulseaudio 45%
ts3 30%

system monitor shows 10% and 10% each…

I personally think that we can’t do anything about this… even my friend with ubuntu 10.10 has similar problems with pulseaudio and skype (moreover when I sometimes use windows it has audiodiag or something like that and it does the same thing… slows down cpu, but because its windows, it can’t take more then 1 cpu core  and has 25% limit )

Thank you very much for your help
For now I’m going to leave it be , I really don’t have time to play with my OS.

Thank you again, topic can now be closed.
