OpenSUSE Upgrade 103 to 11.4 - cannot login

Hi

I am an experienced IT person but a complete newbie to OpenSUSE. I am trying to upgrade a 10.3 installation to 11.4 for a friend. The upgrade seemed to go without hitch but when I rebooted I was surprised to see that I was being asked to login prior to any OpenSUSE background appearing.

So, I logged in as root OK. But then immediately got the response: “Module is unknown”, at which point I was logged out.
Any clues as to what is wrong here, and how to resolve it??

Note: I am able to boot up OpenSUSE fine if I choose either of the Failsafe boot options
e.g. “Failsafe --openSUSE 11.4 - 2.6.37.1-1.2(Default)”; and everything seems to work just fine using that boot option. :sarcastic:

Which method did you use to upgrade?

The description doesn’t sound familiar.

Perhaps video fails on “normal” mode, which would be typical for an
upgrade. I’ doubtful if what you get is the autologin to graphical mode, or
the text mode login.

Perhaps you can make a photo? Of that login.

Which method did you use to upgrade? - I downloaded the 11.4 DVD image from opensuse.org, booted it, and chose the Updrade option.

This is what I see if I try to boot (non-failsafe):

OK, issue resolved.

Perhaps video fails on “normal” mode, which would be typical for an upgrade.

I am now able to boot OpenSUSE 11.4 normally i.e. without recourse to the Failsafe version.

Many thanks Carlos for your hint.
