opensuse update times out

Hi, I seem to be having problem with opensuse update and the opensuse repositories (i.e. not packman): it hangs, sometimes it continues, other times it “times out”.

I tried to ping opensuse.org but that didn’t seem to work (on WinXP it gives a time out error, but with openSUSE 11 it just gives 100% package loss). Pinging google.com and yahoo.com from KDE’s Konsole works fine, but pinging microsoft.com gives similar behaviour as opensuse.org: 100 % package loss.

What is going on? I can reach opensuse.org just fine from my browser, but pinging doesn’t work? And yast update gives irregular behaviour!?

Is this some kind of DNS poisoning?

P.S. I hope this is the rigth forum.

all repositories for openSUSE are on university campuses around the
world…

the address http://software.opensuse.org goes to a magic place that
real time tries to send your request to a ‘fast’ source…

i think that magic places program works best if you live in Utah or
Nuernberg…

some folks find it faster to just pick a close by site, see
http://mirrors.opensuse.org/list/all.html

by the way, the ping answer thingy is turned off at opensuse.org, lots
of sites do that now…it help keep the bad guys from finding
you…you can’t ping my machine…

Yeah, I used to do that with opensuse 10.2 to speed up the slow package manager it had  I haven’t needed it for zypper.

Thanks, I suspected that something like that might be the problem. Ping is just useful to check (diagnose) your internet connection. Oh, well.

By the way, do you know how to turn off the reverse DNS lookup when using ping. Something like “pz-in-f100.google.com” scared the hell out of me. If I was still using WinXP I would have had my virusscanners running full force

you complained of hangs and timeouts!

zypper and YaST both use the same ‘machinery’ to fetch data from the
repos…

what worked to speed up YaST in 10.2 will work to speed up (or prevent
time outs) in zypper on 11.1–use a REAL address, rather than the
address for the magic which works best somewhere other than from YOUR
house…

i’m an expert of nothing, but YOU can be an expert on ping:
open a terminal and type

man ping

see if you can answer your own question…

Give a hacker a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach man and you feed him for a lifetime.

You’re right it probably will work, because it is independant of the package manager. I admit, I’m curious how much of a difference it will make.

GRR. I tried “ping --help” which gave me nothing! Why do we need 3 different command line help functions (–help, man, and info)?

Anyway, somewhere they apparently changed defaults (or an alias), because “ping -n google.com” gives me the behaviour that I was accustomed to.

Thanks,
