openSUSE + Ultrabook

Hi everyone,
What is the best ultrabook to run openSUSE on? Are there any ultrabooks that are built to use openSUSE? I would love to be able to put openSUSE 13.1!

I need to buy an ultrabook for my daughter for school.

Cheers,
Cameron

Dell has one called “Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook” and here is link: XPS 13 Ultrabook™ with optional Full HD Display | Dell

I have used two now, I use one and one belongs to my daughter. They both run in dual boot mode with Windows 8.1 and openSUSE. The default SSD size of 128 GB is not big enough for a dual boot with Windows. One came with a 256 GB and 4 GB of memory which my daughter uses and mine now has a 480 GB SSD and 8 GB of memory. On mine I even have VirtualBox running on it like a champ. It is not a touch screen, but a regular Laptop in every way. I added an external DVD burner and a small SD reader. It comes with two USB 3.0 rated ports so I added an external 7 port USB 3.0 rated hub you can find here: Amazon.com: Plugable 7 Port USB 3.0 Hub with 4A Power Adapter (VIA VL812 Chipset and updated firmware v8581 with Linux, OS X, and Windows support and full USB 2.0 backwards compatibility): Computers & Accessories

The Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook is highly recommended by me and all hard ware works with openSUSE 12.3 & 13.1 including wireless, bluetooth and sound.

Thank You,

Thanks. That looks like a good starting point!

One of my key issues has been GPUs overheating on my laptops with openSUSE. I have a Lenovo idea pad which works ok but my HP Pavillion overheats if I put openSUSE on it.

I have no over heating problems. I keep the latest kernel loaded should that be the issue and I keep a can of duster spray to blow out the vents to remove dust buildup which can be a big issue many do not realize. I have a few tricks for the laptop so if you score one, let share them with you. Mine cost $1K US, listed as last yeas model, no tax and free shipping (Got through Amazon) and had a 256 GB SSD HD and 8 GB memory, 1.7 MHZ CPU. My daughter’s was got through Dell by my brother who has a discount and this years model, was $1150, had free slim line leather jacket, 128 GB SSD HD, 4 GB memory, 1.8 MHZ CPU. I purchase a new 480 GB SSD and replaced the 256 GB SSD in mine. I then took the 256 SSD and put it in my daughters XPS 13. That is the cost breakdown and how the hardware got where it did. The Dell unit was selected for its hardware support of Linux I was able to determine. There are lot of Windows PC’s that may be better, but Linux support may drive you crazy with little to do. Even the XPS 13 is a moving target which is hard to predict as time goes forward. For instants, these two laptops came with a different Wireless/Bluetooth card. Mine is pure Intel, but the newer is not. As luck would have it both have full Linux support, but research was based on the older model. Just so you know.

Thank You,

Hi James,
Does this look ok? Amazon.com: Dell XPS 13 XPS13R2-1250sLV 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver Anodized Aluminum): Computers & Accessories

Yes, that is one of the variants and a good link. The one I ended up with was 1.7 GHz, so slower, but with 8 GB memory. So, your link is faster and cheaper, but less memory. You can not add memory later. You don’t need more memory unless you intend on running VirtualBox under openSUSE I think.

Thank You,

I like the idea of the 15" versions.

Larger displays can be better for sure, but at some point price, size and usability must be considered. It is up to personnel choice I think. In my case ALL functions I need for a single PC for, including Windows apps, bill paying, VM functions, video editing, even remote control of a Raspberry Pi, all exist on a single PC. I never thought I could get it all to work on a single PC like this.

Thank You,

Hi
This one is 8GB and 256GB SSD, good price with minor cosmetic damage…? It’s sold by Amazon itself…

That looks like a really good deal to me.

Thank You,

Hi,

you may have also a look on a Zenbook Prime (Asus UX31A). This Ultrabook works fine with Opensuse 13.1… Have also a look on following thread showing the optimisations you can make on Opensuse 13.1 for this and assume also other Ultrabooks:

Hi
It does, I could live with a few imperfections… looking around though I came across this one;

Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 15 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Ultrabook (59390990): Computers & Accessories

A bit heaver though…

A friend has the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon. He is running Chakra Linux and is working great. The Thinkpads are certified for Linux.
