OpenSuSE Tumbleweed - Lag/Delay Symptoms

OpenSuSE Tumbleweed - Lag/Delay Symptoms:

OS: OpenSuSE Tumbleweed
Using latest KDE 5.20.2
Latest kernel: 5.10.9-rc3.1.ge72caa5-default

INTEL PC:

  • 16 GB RAM
  • i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40 GHz
  • AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series (Its a PCI-Express 7850)

The Intel PCs Motherboard iGPU is also used

AMD PC:

  • 8GB RAM
  • AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Processor
  • AMD RS880 - HAS NO VIDEO CARD

Has anybody noticed delays/lags recently ?

Symptoms:

  • Some apps seem to be very heavily delayed to start after running:

  • There is now an apparent delay (black screen) for maybe 10-20 seconds after the initial OpenSuSE boot screen

  • Krusader File Manager takes me 1 min, 40 secs to actually bring up a window

  • Some of the functions in system settings are delayed by as much as 20-30 seconds

  • Sometimes sound is unavailable (muted) upon boot-up

  • Intermittently the start menu stops responding (freezes)

  • Logging out is ok, but waiting for SDDM login screen is a problem

  • Sometimes massive delays - sometimes minutes
of waiting for terminal to display something after
entering password after command sudo zypper dup

It should be noted that i have the exact same OS on both an i5 Quad Core with 16 GB Ram and an AMD hex-core with 8GB RAM

Both PCs are kept 100% Fully up to date with all latest updates - kernel and otherwise

Same Symptoms on BOTH PCs
Same Symptoms under other Desktop Environment
Booting into an Earlier Kernel version (v5.9) that had no problems makes no differance

SYMPTOMS ON OTHER DESKTOP ENVIRONMENTS:

Xfce:(AMD & INTEL PC)

  • Krusader File Manager no longer works - attempting to
make window full screen size results
in an outline to appear, and then app just stops

Enlightenment

  • Krusader File Manager same load up lag/delays

Lxqt - AMD PC:

  • Krusader File Manager same load up lag/delays

Plasma (Wayland) - AMD PC:

  • Both main 32" and 14" monitors swapped over (small one is primary desktop)
  • Dragging anything around on 32" Monitor results in a sort of ‘windows’ graphics smearing (copies of graphics)

I have had these symptoms for approxx the last 3 weeks now
Issues appear to have started just before main upgrade from kernel 5.9 to kernel 5.10
I have upgraded ALL the time right up until the last 2 hours

Quite different experience here: Tumbleweed 20201110 is the snappiest version ever:

Both PC’s have SSD’s which OpenSuSE is installed on

Skype also has a huge delay in running as well

Degraded Efficiency in large data handling

Demonstrates in selecting 900 emails in inbox on
Seamonkey to ‘Drag’n’Drop’ into another email folder
Note that ALL these emails are cached/stored locally in
the Seamonkey profiles folder

SSD activity happening
SSD LED has been consistently flickering ON/OFF
(Not the commonly seen ON NON-STOP)

Attempting to “drag” all selected emails does nothing
KDE PLASMA does not appear to give any recognition
of the users choice of “Holding down the left mouse
button and moving the mouse”

Un-Selecting all the emails, and selecting about 300 DID work

Selecting another 600 emails also worked, but one notices
a slight apparent KDE PLASMA “Delay” of about 1 second
of struggling before finally accepting the Drag

“Maybe version 5.10.9-rc3 isn’t yet ready” - I assume you mean you have not decided to upgrade to kernel v10 yourself

I stated in my original post that i had no issues until just after the end of kernel v5.9

Im asking for official help here from people who can provide answers or workarounds

You do not mention which filesystem you are using. If you are using btrfs, maybe this is something to look at:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-5.10-Btrfs-Regression

I have been using BTRFS for both / and homes on both of my PC’s
That original issue i posted about is now gone - I think i had re-installed OpenSuSE Tumbleweed

However, the link above that you posted does seem to explain the slow file copying to/from an External USB 3.0 BTRFS drive i have
Hopefully the devs will corect the issue soon

Thanks for your reply
