openSUSE Tumbleweed Has Gotten Slower

I’ve been using openSUSE Tumbleweed for a while, and recently, I’ve noticed that my system has become noticeably slower. Here are some details about my system and what I’ve observed:
CPU: quad core Intel Core i5-10300H (-MT MCP-)
speed/min/max: 1084/800/4500 MHz Kernel: 6.10.5-1-default x86_64 Up: 3h 55m
Mem: 4.47/7.6 GiB (58.8%) Storage: 476.94 GiB (8.0% used) Procs: 267
Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.35

Issue Details:

The system was running fine until recently, but now, I experience significant slowdowns. This includes slower boot times, sluggish performance when opening apps, and even lag during basic tasks like switching windows.
I haven’t installed any new large packages recently that I believe could cause this.

What I’ve Tried:

  • I have checked the system monitor and noticed that CPU usage and RAM are same as always, I’m not sure which processes are causing this.
  • I have already tried rebooting, clearing cache, and updating my system with sudo zypper dup

DE: KDE / DS:X11

feel free to ask me any additional specs!

thx y’all

I think you best option is to look at the boot time, if that indeed did get significantly slower. For boot there are good tools to study the boot process and what takes time.

See here under 2.3 from three commands that you can run. It would also be good to look at the journal if anything pops up. Share what you think is interesting in this topic.

If it is recent, you probably can roll-back to an older snapshot. If so, do so and run the same 3 commands and compare the output.

What’s the GPU? One idea is stuff being software-accelerated.

hello @marel thx for replying !
actually boot time is just okay and no delay! my guess is that the problem lies within the desktop session or gpu!
the strange part is that more than half of my cpu and Ram are not using ! so another guess is that maybe the kernel update has caused the problem! and I also switched back to older kernels and still experiencing the same problem.

hello @Espionage724 yeah I was also thinking abt my gpu , but I have installed this gpu for almost 4 month and out of no where yesterday it got slower !

and I looked for it and I got this unexpected error with switching my gpu version ;

Download (curl) error for ‘https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed/x86_64/x11-video-nvidiaG05-470.256.02-62.2.x86_64.rpm’:
Error code: Curl error 56
Error message: Recv failure: Connection reset by peer

Interesting in your opening post I read:

I think it would be good to be more specific on what is slow and how slow, so for example “it takes 3 seconds before the GUI pops up when I start vlc from the comand line” but chose what is slowest for you.

That curl problem does have nothing to with slowness, somehow the nvidia serer decided to drop the connection.

yes sorry I forgot to remove that ! boot time issue was related to the Plymouth that i recently changed !

but anyways I just fixed it via toggling between nvidia drivers , and it is much better now !

btw thx for your time!
