openSUSE Tumbleweed 20250606-0 -> to anything newer == no display output

Hi all, this is my first post here. I installed TW few months ago and things were smooth until update after the 20250606-0 release. When I do a “zypper dup” form 20250606-0 to something never, I could not get besides boot menu option. After I select snapshot monitor does not receive any signal. It looks like the computer is alive, I can blindly type password and I can shut it down or reset (via CTRL+ALT+DEL). The only option is to boot to the snapshot and use version 20250606-0.

I am using systemd EFI bootloader, which has graphical logo during the boot. This logo is also not displayed. Display goes off after I select the snapshot.

I am running KDE plasma installation on Minisforum BD875m motherboard (it is Ryzden 9 7945HX on integration Radeon 610M GPU.

Is this related to Kernel or to GPU Mesa drivers? What are the options to understand this issue and find out, where the problem could be?

Advice would be appreciated. Thanks

There are alread several threads recently. It seems AMD GPU related…

Thank you. I try to search more around. Would you recommend to be patient and keep trying distribution update command during next weeks?

Is this something quite common with TW distribution? That time to time it breaks so the system becomes unusable in such bad way?

Are you getting to Login? At startup did you try to start a previous Kenel? Sorry but I have to use the translator … sometimes the problem is a triviality. I have Tumbleweed for years and the system rarely breaks, before it happened because I used the proprietary Nvidia Drivers that sometimes were not aligned with the Kernel now I use the Mesa-dri-nouveau and everything runs smoothly. You have AMD Radeon and they should be excellent with the Open Drivers
libvulkan_radeon .

I am booting to a snapshot from 20250606 using kernel 15.0.2 if I am correct. All works fine and I can rollback to this snapshot and use the system as usual. But when I do upgrade (and I tried it multiple times, last time yesterday) there is this issue.

I can select snapshot to boot from and once I do it for anything newer (it means 20250610 and newer) after I press ENTER by selecting snapshot the screen goes off and there is no signal. I just guess that system boots normally further. I can blindly shut it down or log in. However there is no display output. I am using HDMI connection. Then I restart PC select the last working snapshot 20250606 and display works again.

I was using TW for 2 months and all upgrades were super smooth, no issue and I was impressed by the distribution (I am still impressed) and I am glad that I found it. I like it a lot regardless of this bug, which should be solvable in time.

Can you check if the update which breaks your machine contains the package kernel-firmware-amdgpu?

20250610 had an update to kernel-firmware-amdgpu (see New Tumbleweed snapshot 20250610 released! )
so if 20250610 breaks the display @hui made a good catch!

Thank you both, you hit the nail. Bug is reported and it seems to get fixed. There is a last question from my side.

Is it possible to do a TW distribution update and specify a list of packages to exclude from the update? This could solve the issue, while having the rest of the packages updated?

Potentially I can imagine letting the upgrade as it is and downgrade packages back after the update? Would this work?

You can lock the kernel-firmware-amdgpu package.
