I’ve been replacing Windows. Not a fan of it, especially on lower spec hardware.
I’ve tried Ubuntu and Fedora but I didn’t like them too much. The layout was a little unnatural for me.
So, I did some research and found KDE rather than GNOME. A little more found openSUSE to be more logical. I know this forum will be bias but anyone want to give their views on this.
Also, where is the best place to buy this in the UK? This is the cheapest I’ve found:

Uh… how about FREE. If you have a slow link (so you can’t download
quickly), try finding a local Linux person… I’m sure they’ll burn
you a copy if you supply them a blank DVD.
If you are wanting to show some monetary support, then you will
want to buy the “retail” openSUSE product, rather than somebody
downloading the free one and making their own copies for a fee.
On speedtest.net, my speed was so low, they had to round it up to 0.01.
It would take several days so I would rather just buy a copy. I don’t know anyone that uses linux in my local area. I have a couple of relatives that do but not ones I’ll see anytime soon so I’m not to fussed to spend a fiver.
OpenSuse is indeed a good starting point, as is Ubuntu.
I say try out both, a test on how far each one can work for you.
Now you did say you tried Ubuntu already and you said KDE feels better for you, but you may also want to get the hang of Gnome as well.
As a Gnome user I prefer Ubuntu over OpenSuse, I find OpenSuses version of gnome quite lacking.
In terms of KDE though OpenSuse seems to be good at it but KDE in its current state is a little clunky so thats why I suggest a gnome based system.
Both have their strong points and pitfalls, experiment and you never know where it will lead!
